For most of the twentieth century, the making of animated cartoons was
mechanized and standardized to allow for high-volume production: thousands
of drawings were inked and painted onto individual transparent celluloid
sheets (called "cels") and then photographed in succession, a
labor-intensive process that was divided across scores of artists and
technicians, most of them anonymous. In order to understand how the
industrial mode of production influenced the medium’s visual style, this
book regards each frame of a given animated cartoon as a historical
document in its own right. This new consideration of the materiality of the
medium analyzes cartoons frame by frame to expose hitherto unseen qualities
of the image. The book covers the different technologies of reproduction
involved in this process, from photography to xerography, as well as the
idiosyncrasies of the image—from abstract imagery to mistakes in
reproduction—that can be seen only when the film is halted. What emerges is
both a new methodology for thinking about animation, the idea of
frame-by-frame analysis, and a highly original account of an art formed on
the assembly line.

Animating Film Theory provides an enriched understanding of the
relationship between two of the most unwieldy and unstable organizing
concepts in cinema and media studies: animation and film theory. For the
most part, animation has been excluded from the purview of film theory. The
contributors to this collection consider the reasons for this
marginalization while also bringing attention to key historical
contributions across a wide range of animation practices, geographic and
linguistic terrains, and historical periods. They delve deep into questions
of how animation might best be understood, as well as how it relates to
concepts such as the still, the moving image, the frame, animism, and
utopia. The contributors take on the kinds of theoretical questions that
have remained underexplored because, as Karen Beckman argues, scholars of
cinema and media studies have allowed themselves to be constrained by too
narrow a sense of what cinema is. This collection reanimates and expands
film studies by taking the concept of animation seriously. Contributors.

Genndy Tartakovsky is widely regarded as a pioneer in contemporary Western
animation of the 20th and 21st centuries. His groundbreaking and prolific
output, ranging from Dexter's Laboratory to Samurai Jack and Sym-Bionic
Titan, has become a mainstay of contemporary animated programming, and
collectively, the cornerstone of both titans of the industry such as
Cartoon Network and Adult Swim. This open access book draws attention to
the comparatively mysterious figure of this creator, while simultaneously
celebrating his singular vision, mastery of formal technique, genre
sensitivity, personal stylistic flair, and how these aesthetic and
narrative elements combine to produce what the author calls an 'animation
of sincerity' in all his works. The ebook editions of this book are

Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs (David Hand, 1937) occupies a central place
within the history of global animation. Based on the German fairy tale by
the Brothers Grimm, the film was the first feature-length animated film
produced by the Disney Studio and served to announce the animated cartoon
as an industrial art form. Yet Disney’s landmark version not only set in
motion the Golden Age of the Hollywood cartoon, but has continued to stand
as an international sensation, prompting multiple revisions and remakes
within a variety of national filmmaking contexts. This book explores the
enduring qualities that have marked Snow White’s influence and legacy,
providing a collection of original chapters that reflect upon its
pioneering use of technology and contributions to animation’s visual style,
the film’s reception within an American context, and its status as a global
cultural phenomenon.

Global Animation Theory offers detailed and diverse insights into the
methodologies of contemporary animation studies, as well as the topics
relevant for today’s study of animation. The contact between practical and
theoretical approaches to animation at Animafest Scanner, is closely
connected to host of this event, the World Festival of Animated Film
Animafest Zagreb. It has given way to academic writing that is very open to
practical aspects of animation, with several contributors being established
not only as animation scholars, but also as artists. This anthology
presents, alongside an introduction by the editors and a preface by well
known animation scholar Giannalberto Bendazzi, 15 selected essays from the
first three Animafest Scanner editions. They explore various significant
aspects of animation studies, some of them still unknown to the English
speaking communities.

"This book offers the first comprehensive study of the many interfaces
shaping the relationship between comics and videogames. It combines
in-depth conceptual reflection with a rich selection of paradigmatic case
studies from contemporary media culture. The editors have gathered a
distinguished group of international scholars working at the interstices of
comics studies and game studies to explore two interrelated areas of
inquiry: The first part of the book focuses on hybrid medialities and
experimental aesthetics ""between"" comics and videogames; the second part
zooms in on how comics and videogames function as transmedia expansions
within an increasingly convergent and participatory media culture. The
individual chapters address synergies and intersections between comics and
videogames via a diverse set of case studies ranging from independent and
experimental projects via popular franchises from the corporate worlds of
DC and Marvel to the more playful forms of media mix prominent in Japan.
Offering an innovative intervention into a number of salient issues in
current media culture, Comics and Videogames will be of interest to
scholars and students of comics studies, game studies, popular culture
studies, transmedia studies, and visual culture studies."
