Dear Woolf Friends,
Just a reminder about the Literature Cambridge Woolf Summer Course in July. This will run twice. First, live online, 10-14 July (includes a weekend, which we hope will be convenient for many people); then live in person in Cambridge.
Our theme is Virginia Woolf: Writing Life. We study five books, one per day, with a lecture and Cambridge-style supervision (= tutorial). Plus talks, discussions, and more.
Set reading: Mrs Dalloway, To the Lighthouse, Orlando, The Waves, and Flush.
In Cambridge we will visit Trinity Hall (founded 1350), where Leslie Stephen was a Fellow in the mid-19th century. Retired Fellow Alison Hennegan will guide us around the college and tell us some of its fascinating history. Claire Davison will talk about Leslie Stephen's life writing about the Alps.
We will also visit Newnham College (founded 1871), the second women's college to be established in Cambridge. Woolf knew a number of the Fellows and students there. We will learn about the history of this important institution from College Archivist Frieda Midgley, and Ann Kennedy Smith will talk about the life writing of Classics Fellow and friend of Woolf, Jane Harrison.
Marielle O'Neille will talk about Leonard Woolf's political life writing, and we will do a reading of Freshwater led by Ellie Mitchell.
For those need to conserve time and finances, the live online course is a good option - despite being online, it is an intensive and hugely rewarding experience. See the Blog page for posts by people who have taken the summer courses over the years.
We will study:
Mrs Dalloway (1925)
To the Lighthouse (1927)
Orlando (1928)
The Waves (1931)
Flush (1933)
