[Vwoolf] Q about Bloomsbury's dogs (a Woofian Q, if you will)

Dear Ellie

I thought I should add this because it could be a useful question for the next step in your search, as it might be interesting to find out why was the Clinker given to Angela specifically in the summer of 1928 and not before, as by the look of it Virginia and Nessa spoke in Feb of 1928 about giving Clinker to Angela that summer. There might not be any special reason for that, yet perhaps also there could be.
It’s just something that springs to my mind, as it could be useful to look up.

Eleanor, you are a lucky lady today, I have found you the approximate date!!! Imagine the summer of 1928.

You see, I wasn't totally satisfied with my morning research as I couldn't tell you anything about the beautiful, fluffy Clinker. You said you looked through diaries and letter (I chose to totally ignored that, even though you told me). On the Tate photograph of Clinker (year 1933) it says it was given to Angelica Bell by Vita Nicholsons.

Your research leads you to late 1920s. Well, Vita met Virginia in late 1922, so that would be too early. I went ahead and typed word "Clinker" in Woolf's "The Complete Collection".

Sat 11th February 1928, Virginia wrote to Vanessa, after she had been to Vita's :
'Tell Angelica I saw Clinker yesterday—She is most charming: very gay; skittish, elegant, and provocative—She sent Angelica her best love, and looks forward to being hers in the summer.'

Ah summer!
Do read this letter (VW letter to VB, dated June 7th 1928), as soon after it was written Clinker came to be in Angelica's arms.

I'm happy I could help you. Enjoy your day.

I thought I shall sleep forever, but your email got me up on my feet. So instead of going for a morning run I decided to do some morning research. This is what I have found, thanks to Paula Maggio’s Blogging Woolf: https: //bloggingwoolf. org/2017/08/26/virginia-woolf-and-her-dogs-on-nationaldogday/amp/

If you can’t find the book by Maureen Adams do let me know and I’ll see what I can do.

Dear Woolfians,

I hope this finds you all well this spring. I'm writing to ask if anyone might possibly be able to direct me to any sources which provide dates for when the Woolfs, the Bells & co. had which dogs? I've been tracing as much as I can with the Diary and Letters, but still have some gaps!

I'd be immensely grateful for any leads, but I am particularly looking to trace dates for Clinker, the Bells' dog. There are NPG / Tate photographs online dating from the late 1920s but it would be wonderful to know when the Bells got her.

With best wishes and warm thanks,

Ellie Mitchell
