Jamie Loftus, a writer and the host of the podcast “The Bechdel Cast,”
first read “Lolita” when she was in middle school and has been haunted
by it ever since. She decided to unpack her complicated feelings about
the material in the new “Lolita Podcast” which, despite its simplistic
name, is a remarkably researched and complex dive into the rabbit hole
of Nabokov’s work and the cultural twisting of his reputation. Loftus
believes that Nabokov intended the story to damn its protagonist rather
than exalt him, but she is more interested in exploring the long fallout
of the novel. She probes many aspects of the “Lolita” industrial
complex, from the film adaptations to the fashion shows, attempting to
get to the heart of why the book maddens and endures.

*An intimate, inspiring memoir by educator and labor union leader Karen
Lewis, a formidable fighter, a staunch defender of teachers and
students, and a beloved Chicagoan.*

In 2012, Karen Lewis led the Chicago Teachers Union to a historic
strike, challenging the city’s powerful mayor and paving the way for an
unprecedented wave of teacher strikes in the decade that followed.

But Lewis’s life took her in rich and surprising directions long before
she landed in the CTU President’s office. /I Didn’t Come Here to Lie/,
written in collaboration with historian and education expert Elizabeth
Todd-Breland, tells Lewis’s story in full for the first time, capturing
her lively wit, her charisma, and her commitment to building the schools
and communities teachers, students, and families deserve.

From her childhood on Chicago’s South Side to her teen years organizing
Black Power walkouts, from her education at Mount Holyoke and Dartmouth
to her years in Oklahoma and Barbados and her stints in medical school
and film school, readers follow Lewis through a life full of
exploration. Wherever she was, she maintained a strong commitment to
building fairness. She found her calling in the classroom, teaching
science for more than twenty years before becoming a union leader in
Chicago.

Up until her untimely death from brain cancer in 2021, Karen Lewis was
spirited, unshakeable, and fierce. She remains a model for current
organizers and teachers doing the day-to-day work of building a better
world. /I Didn’t Come Here to Lie /is a testament to one of the true
revolutionaries of her generation.

April is Sexual Assault Action Month (SAAM)!

The purpose of CARE's annual Sexual Assault Action Month (SAAM) campaign
is to increase the Northwestern community's understanding of the roots
and impacts of sexual assault, to motivate all community members to
contribute to prevention and survivor support, and to foster connection
and healing for sexual assault survivors. It's important for us to
remain involved in prevention and to support survivors year-round, but
April provides a dedicated time for us to center these important issues.

For more information on the history of SAAM, you can check out the
_National Sexual Violence Resource Center (NSVRC) here.
<https://urldefense.com/v3/__https://northwestern.us20.list-manage.com/track/click?u=ecc8f42736a9405b016c3fe36&id=6312ed0979&e=979738e349__;!!Dq0X2DkFhyF93HkjWTBQKhk!XMA6Mx9NOYtXjsqnWsqSgjF6M855y6RF2qNMlvw5v4-_KMUR87FxCgc-7NcNh_ViVriTChH64da2JGGie9gm3s1fN_NVO7AptmOp$>_

The 2025 theme for Sexual Assault Action Month is Collective Action,
Collective Care. This year marks the April following the official merger
of CARE with Northwestern’s Health Promotion and Wellness (HPaW) office.
CAREHPAW’s combined mission is providing outreach and education around
holistic wellness through a lens of prevention, harm reduction, and
survivor-centeredness in order to cultivate communities of care on
campus.  This April we will focus on co-creating spaces of mutual
support, collective action, and shared learning for survivors and all
people who have been impacted by sexual harm with the understanding that
work toward healing and well-being is always communal.

*Constructive Conflict: Skills for Having Hard Conversations* is a
workshop that delves into the importance of conflict as a crucial
element of communication, while exploring the opportunities that
conflict can give us. Many of us have grown up learning that conflict is
a negative experience and one that should generally be avoided. In this
workshop, we'll learning how to distinguish between being uncomfortable
and being unsafe, what conflict can indicate about the depth and
importance of a relationship, and how to productively engage in conflict
with colleagues and move forward together afterwards.

/*Zhegagoynak, the place now known as Chicagoland, is a vital
center for Indigenous art, past and present.*/

This winter, The Block will celebrate the region’s Indigenous creativity
with a major exhibition, /Woven Being: Art for Zhegagoynak/Chicagoland/
<https://urldefense.com/v3/__https://northwestern.us20.list-manage.com/track/click?u=ecc8f42736a9405b016c3fe36&id=e823511016&e=979738e349__;!!Dq0X2DkFhyF93HkjWTBQKhk!XMA6Mx9NOYtXjsqnWsqSgjF6M855y6RF2qNMlvw5v4-_KMUR87FxCgc-7NcNh_ViVriTChH64da2JGGie9gm3s1fN_NVO27ImTV5$>(January
25-July 13, 2025).

Through the collaboration of four artists with connections to
Zhegagoynak—*Andrea Carlson* (Grand Portage Ojibwe/European descent),
*Kelly Church *(Match-E-Be-Nash-She-Wish Tribe of Pottawatomi/Ottawa),
*Nora Moore Lloyd *(Lac Courte Oreilles Band of Lake Superior Ojibwe),
and *Jason Wesaw *(Pokagon Band of Potawatomi) —/Woven Being/ explores
confluences that continue to shape Indigenous creative practices in the
region and beyond.

Chicagoland is the traditional homeland of the people of the Council of
Three Fires— the Ojibwe, Potawatomi, and Odawa—as well as the Menominee,
Miami, Ho-Chunk, Sac, Fox, Kickapoo, and Illinois nations. It has been a
longstanding cultural and economic hub for Indigenous peoples and
continues to be today. People from many Indigenous nations call the
region home, and the city of Chicago has the third-largest urban
Indigenous population in the United States. The richness of Indigenous
experiences and contributions are often excluded from Chicago’s art
histories. /Woven Being/ counters this by centering the ideas, choices,
and voices of Indigenous artists
