Ah! Thank you, Sarah. I had never heard of that unpleasant syndrome, but I think that is a perfect term.

The snarling does evoke/reiterate the same kind of badmouthing that Bloomsbury has always received over the decades. Does anyone recall Tom Paulin savaging Woolf in 1991 his broadcast television series J’Accuse? Same vitriol.

The nasties are prob due in part to the tall poppy syndrome: even a slight success (delayed by a century) brings out the worst in some critics.
