Hi everyone,
I hope you’re all doing well! I am excited to announce that after the summer break, the Woolf Seminars are back! Just like last year, there is an amazing lineup of speakers covering some really fascinating topics.
Our first seminar will feature Verita Sriratana on October 18th, 2024, at 7 PM (Turkey time). She’ll be presenting a talk titled “Virginia Woolf’s Necropolitical Apocalypse in Contemporary Southeast Asian Films: The Girl and the Gun [Babae at Baril] (2019) and The Paradise of Thorns [วิมานหนาม] (2024).” Her talk will explore the concept of “necropolitical apocalypse” and examine how it appears as a recurring theme in Virginia Woolf’s writing, drawing connections with two contemporary Southeast Asian films.

Verita is an Associate Professor of Literary Studies at the Department of English, Faculty of Arts, Chulalongkorn University. She is currently a research fellow at the Käte Hamburger Centre for Apocalyptic and Post-Apocalyptic Studies (CAPAS) at Heidelberg University, where she works on a research project entitled “Don’t they know it’s not the end of the (patriarchal and heteronormative) world?: Misogyny as (Post)Apocalypse”. She is the winner of the British Association for Slavonic and East European Studies Women's Forum Prize for "I Burn (Marx’s) Paris: 'Capital' Cities, Alienation & Deconstruction in the Works of Bruno Jasieński", published in Temporalities of Modernism (2022). She has presented an academic paper on the topic of “'Laughter, No Laughing Matter': Affect as Epistemic Resistance against Necropower in Poland’s Orange Alternative and Thailand’s Youth-led Pro-democracy Movement” at the British Association for Slavonic and East European Studies Annual Conference in 2023. Her recent publications include “‘The Straight and Strong Man’s Burden’: An Analysis of Benevolent Sexism as Misogyny in International Women’s Day Speeches from Leaders of Belarus, Russia and Thailand”, published in Stance: The Thai Feminist Review (2023). Her forthcoming works include the Thai translation of Susan Sellers's novel entitled Vanessa and Virginia (2008), an article on cats in Bohumil Hrabal's writing, and an article on LGBTQINA+ rights in Thailand.
