Thanks Mark for this article. As Carrington's biographer, I'm really annoyed that Laura Freeman writes that Carrington "lost her virginity to Lytton Strachey." Despite what she writes, Carrington was sleeping with Mark Gertler (and it's in her letters and my book), and we can't be sure that she slept with Strachey. I wonder if she got that misinformation from Paul Levy's edition of Strachey's letters; while he was editing that book I heard him make that same claim in a public talk. I knew how to reach her to correct that! The Times link only lists her other articles. Sad to think that all that is what she's being remembered for.

This seems an apt time to remind you that no annual conference on Woolf is
yet planned for 2026, the plans for Nova Scotia, sadly, having fallen
through. Anyone interested should get in touch!

I loathe Barbie and rejoice Woolf will not join the chorus line of
joyful compliance and false bodies. Ellen Moody

As a distraction from serious work, I've spent some time scanning the
four textually-significant editions of Mrs. Dalloway (the first three
printings of the Hogarth Press edition and the first printing of the
Harcourt Brace edition, plus the Introduction to the Modern Library
edition) and have posted the scans, together with texts extracted from
the scans, here:
https://urldefense.com/v3/__https://mendelson.org/VirginiaWoolf/mrsdallowaytext.html__;!!KGKeukY!zlowG8r7VGreaVSLqOPQqkFm2j92CuCcdXrpOrNvau0FZldf_bl4VdHSiZhxC7pH5k_J7_ycm9er02Mv1doCECyPmOfQj94qE8M$ <https://urldefense.com/v3/__https://mendelson.org/VirginiaWoolf/mrsdallowaytext.html__;!!KGKeukY!zlowG8r7VGreaVSLqOPQqkFm2j92CuCcdXrpOrNvau0FZldf_bl4VdHSiZhxC7pH5k_J7_ycm9er02Mv1doCECyPmOfQj94qE8M$>
A further document linked to that page is a PDF made by comparing the
texts of the first American and first British editions, in which it easy
to see the differences within the text, rather than by consulting a
table of variants.
As a note on the page explains, the scans are of less than ideal quality
for three reasons: my incompetence as a first-time book scanner; the
relatively cheap scanning equipment that I used; and the battered and
damaged copies that were all I could afford of the early editions. A
first Hogarth Press edition typically costs US$5,000 to US$50,000. I was
able to get a battered, heavily-repaired, rebound ex-library copy for a
very tiny fraction of the lower amount. (The copy was discarded from the
Cambridge Union Library, so it may conceivably have been read by someone
in Virginia Woolf's circle.)
The page also includes notes on Virginia Woolf's revisions in the later
Hogarth printings, and some notes on the texts of current editions.
The one edition that I wanted to consult, but have not been able to see
(because I'm not yet willing to pay more than US$100 for a copy), is the
Folio Society edition, which apparently claims to use the first edition
with some emendations, but doesn't specify what those emendations are.
If anyone who has that edition is willing to check it against the
variants that mentioned on the linked web page, I would be grateful indeed.
I hope someone might find all this useful.
