[Vwoolf] Owning Virginia

Emma Woolf always seems very possessive over VW, even though she never met her and is only related to her through marriage.  Perhaps it’s not surprising, since I’ve watched quite a few episodes of the TV programme, “Who Do You Think You Are?”, and the featured “celebrity” is often shocked and even tears up when discovering that some previously unknown ancestor died horribly or ended up in the workhouse or was imprisoned or was a slave or was a slave-owner (or even a black slave-owner).

AFAIK my ancestors were, on paper at least, very dull and very working-class.  Not far back in the 19th C they’re signing their names with an X – e.g. great-grandmother Clarke at her wedding in 1858.  I learnt recently that girls may have been taught to read but not necessarily taught how to write.
