[Vwoolf] A Woolf sighting…

In the 1970s my parents used to live in Seaford on the Sussex coast. To get to London on the train you had to change at Lewes (perhaps you still do). I used to see Quentin Bell on the platform there, waiting for the train to Brighton I think, as he had a post at Sussex University. I never had the nerve to open a conversation with him, although we had talked at a cheese-and-wine party at Leeds University. But I think I blotted my copy book that time by describing some piece of monstrous modernity as "progress," hoping he would catch the note of irony. Alas, he did not.

If you want to chase up further writerly connections between Lewes and bonfire night, see my article: "Joseph Conrad's Guys and Dolls (and Scarecrows and Dummies)," The Conradian vol 48, no 1, 40-49).
