Dearest Woolfians:
Hope you are all well too, enjoying the summer.
This "Life" moment is indeed memorable and could cause reams of comments
from this one syllable.
After all these years, I would briefly answer Claire's query by opening
another pathway (which I have
explored in the past - hopefully will return to later - Later).
- "Life!" - If I take my translator's reading glasses, I'd say this can
be read as "*C'est la vie* !" - "(Such is) Life!".
So potentially a semi-sour, saddened, wistful tone. With a resilient
stance, though: Life is not easy, but one has to accept it as it is. Any
effort against life is to no avail. Life is *what it is*.
- "Life" was to literally be a *Chapter* in the "Scheme for (the
remainder of) TW" (TW, *The Two holograph drafts*, J.W. Graham ed.,
Notebook 10, page 757 = "Life" is a topic.
- Another much broader line of comment is the ethical stance: VW wanted
to write about "Life, Death, etc." "Nothing else matter(ed)".
- This is pointing to the core of her philosophical approach to
writing (similar to Proust's, amongst others). The effort to TELL "Life".
That was the goal. That was her life.
- The possibility of an impossible mission.
Excuse the orts and fragments - in a rush. Thank you!
All the best
