The R. & R. Clark Archive (Dep. 229) is held by the National Library of Scotland and their Invoice Journals are the most dependable for this info. The Hogarth Press Archives in Reading, with a folder for each book, should complement the Clark Invoice Journals, but their contents vary. They often have requests for estimates, which don’t seem to be available on the Clark side, rather than bills for the finished product.

The MAPP project might well have the relevant business records—a very interesting point, Stuart!

Of course, times have changed from pre-typewriter days (e.g. Dickens), when the printers had to interpret handwriting, and then from VW’s time when the printers had to print from typescripts. Not everyone had their books professionally typed, but VW usually did.

However, VW usually made substantial changes at the proof stage, and was charged accordingly and substantially by R. & R. Clark, her printer in Edinburgh. In all the discussions of VW’s proofs, this expense does not seem to have been remarked upon. “The Years” was exceptional, where she made huge changes to the galley proofs. These cost a fortune.

I do not seem to have any costs readily to hand, except for “Jacob’s Room”, where there are, unfortunately, no proofs extant:

Typesetting £52.18.2

Extra for small type, etc. £4.5.0

Alterations and proofs £10.11.6

Trying to put that into today’s money: Typesetting @ £57.3.2 = c. £4,059

Alterations @ £10.11.6 = c. £748

Yikes! I wouldn’t pay that.

Stuart
