I was reminded of a Wagner opera in the hands of a top-notch conductor: the constant feeling that one is in good hands, the material under control, the sense of progression, of briskness even, no lingering over details (we could have had more sex with Mrs Raven Hill or accompanied Leonard to Clive’s deathbed), and yet plenty of chapters still to go. And then it ends, in Clive’s library at Charleston.
