Re: "Love Triangles..." *Guardian.* Elizabeth Bowen would be surprised, as
I've noted elsewhere, to be cited as part
of the Bloomsbury set--though she did have her own daring "triangles."
Though she was friends with Woolf, enjoyed her laughter and sense of fun,
and admired her as a writer (she said "she was like no other"), she had
reservations about Bloomsbury's style: its "smugness,"ingrowingness" and
"godlessness" that sometimes made her "claustrophobic." And Woolf sometimes
describes Bowen spitefully in her diary. When Charles Ritchie, one of
Bowen's lovers, related in his journal that he told Bowen that Woolf had
expressed no fondness for her, she remarked that she did not take offense,
cooly noting "perhaps her affection was intermittent (as mine is for so
many people)." Nevertheless, Woolf and Bowen relished each other's
company--most of the time--from the early 1930s until weeks before Woolf's
death.
