[Vwoolf] £500 an exaggeration?

“We took the Bus to Kingston; visited for the last time let us hope in our lives, the Recruiting Office, & after waiting in the familiar room with the two wooden benches the towel hanging up & the khaki coat, L. was summoned, & given his paper which states that he is ‘permanently & totally disabled.’  We suppose that this might fetch £500 if sold.’

The barracks were demolished in 1962, with only the Keep (1875) remaining:

Refs. to “The White City Case” pop up in “The Times” between Dec 1916 and May 1917.  The White City was another recruiting location in London.  The suggestion (23 Feb) appears to be that a complete exemption could cost between £100 and £150:



However, there is a suggestion here (14 Dec 2016) of going up to £500:
