See Bicknell’s "Selected Letters of Leslie Stephen" (2 vols: 1864-1882 & 1882-1904), Vol.2 p.322, 5/2/1885: “a hailstorm of unprecedented ferocity” smashed about ½ the glass in the “glass houses” at Talland House.  “The glass is lying in ghastly heaps on the floor.”
