Which reminds me – in St Stephen’s Hall in the Palace of Westminster there is now a plaque adjacent to the statue of Viscount Falkland, Secretary of State to Charles I (1600–1649) in 1642–3, which reads: ‘On 27th April 1909 Miss Marjory Humes chained herself to the nearby statue [. . .] as part of a demonstration in support of women’s suffrage. The spur of the right boot was accidentally broken off by the chains.’
