[Vwoolf] Vwoolf Digest, Vol 103, Issue 12

Thanks Michael. I hadn’t really thought of biofiction as work that takes an existing fictional character and uses it in a new novel (of which there are many examples), thinking of it more as applied only to fictions using a person who actually existed (as several people have done with Woolf, and as, of course, Cunningham does in The Hours). But it’s as useful a term as any, I guess, for a work such as Wide Sargasso Sea. These are, however, perhaps different issues than the one we began with, which was how people felt about Cunningham being given yet another very prestigious platform from which to repeat his ideas about Mrs Dalloway, when there might be several others with fresher points of view who could have been asked, had Vintage ever heard of them! Happily, people have many different editions of Woolf to choose among these days!

Mark, I wonder if that is one of the best virtues of biofiction, that the author can update the character so that contemporary readers can see why the characters are actually relatable. I can certainly see why Septimus is a more relatable character, especially to traumatized veterans, as you noted earlier. But in an interview, Cunningham says that one of his main ideas in The Hours was to imagine the life of Clarissa as if she "was free to live as a lesbian."

While there are certainly some potential problems with biofiction, one of the genre's strengths is that skillful creative writers enable readers to see why a story such as Clarissa Dalloway's will have major appeal to audiences in many times and places. In a sense, someone like Cunningham has mined Clarissa's story for some great riches and then updated it in such a way that contemporary readers can see what might not have been immediately apparent to common readers. There, obviously, is a difference between casual readers and students who study the texts, and when I teach the two works together, my students usually say that they can see things in the 1925 novel that they failed to see before their reading of The Hours. I guess my point is this: a biofliction like The Hours can actually enhance a book like Mrs. Dalloway for exactly the reason you specify, which is its relatability.

That's my view, at least,

michael

A good question, Michael. My own view is that many students probably will find Clarissa less ‘relatable’ than Septimus, given the realities of their lives these days. I always wonder about the experience of a common reader who picks up Mrs Dalloway because they enjoyed The Hours!

Mark, Here is what I wonder: are the publishing houses responding to shifts in reader sensibilities and expectations? Thus, they pick Cunningham because that will sell more copies of Mrs D. Or, are they promoting a less scholarly and more narcissistic approach to literature in order to sell more contemporary biographical novels? Thus, they picked Cunningham because that will sell more copies of The Hours and other biographical novels about Woolf.

I think there is a shift in reader expectations and sensibilities, which might account for the choice of Cunningham. The scholars try to give readers precise and accurate information about authors, their works, and their time. Biographical novelists clarify how the life and work can be used in the present to make life more meaningful and livable. I am not critical of the Cunningham choice. I am teaching The Hours next semester. I am just interested in why the shift is happening.

I think it is interesting that a biographical novelist rather than a scholar is the person who was asked to author the foreword.

Dear all,

Both Gretchen Gerzina and Karen Levenback have posted Michael Cunningham’s NY Times Book Review. It draws from Cunningham’s foreword to Mrs. Dalloway for the paperback Vintage post-copyright edition to be released on January 5, 2021 (with “the original British” format never seen in a US edition!). I have opinions about Cunningham and would be very interested in a conversation.

Catching up on my LRB backlog, I was reading Paul Keegan's article in the
Oct 20 issue about the TS Eliot-Emily Hale correspondence. It says (as no
doubt the Eliot people on this list already know) that Eliot would sometimes
enclose letters from Woolf, Joyce, Spender and others when he wrote to Hale.
As this archive has been sealed for 50 years, presumably that means there
are unpublished letters in there . a job for the VW Bulletin perhaps!

Apologies if this is old news.

Hi all, I am working on a project that requires a copy (or scan) of the
first Mrs D by Hogarth 1925 and the only copies I see anywhere for sale are
exorbitant. Does anyone by some miracle have a scan of the first edition
