[Vwoolf] Vwoolf Digest, Vol 103, Issue 12

A good question, Michael. My own view is that many students probably will find Clarissa less ‘relatable’ than Septimus, given the realities of their lives these days. I always wonder about the experience of a common reader who picks up Mrs Dalloway because they enjoyed The Hours!

Mark, Here is what I wonder: are the publishing houses responding to shifts in reader sensibilities and expectations? Thus, they pick Cunningham because that will sell more copies of Mrs D. Or, are they promoting a less scholarly and more narcissistic approach to literature in order to sell more contemporary biographical novels? Thus, they picked Cunningham because that will sell more copies of The Hours and other biographical novels about Woolf.

To Michael’s point, I agree that teaching literature as a kind of sociology or welfare work has become the norm—if it cannot be shown to be “relevant” to current situations, then it is unlikely to be taught. As a formalist, I’m glad I am out of the game!

I think there is a shift in reader expectations and sensibilities, which might account for the choice of Cunningham. The scholars try to give readers precise and accurate information about authors, their works, and their time. Biographical novelists clarify how the life and work can be used in the present to make life more meaningful and livable. I am not critical of the Cunningham choice. I am teaching The Hours next semester. I am just interested in why the shift is happening.

Earlier US editions also were prefaced by the commentaries of novelists in the brief moment of post-copyright before the door slammed shut again. I think it is interesting that a biographical novelist rather than a scholar is the person who was asked to author the foreword.

Dear all,

Both Gretchen Gerzina and Karen Levenback have posted Michael Cunningham’s NY Times Book Review. It draws from Cunningham’s foreword to Mrs. Dalloway for the paperback Vintage post-copyright edition to be released on January 5, 2021 (with “the original British” format never seen in a US edition!). I have opinions about Cunningham and would be very interested in a conversation.

Catching up on my LRB backlog, I was reading Paul Keegan's article in the
Oct 20 issue about the TS Eliot-Emily Hale correspondence. It says (as no
doubt the Eliot people on this list already know) that Eliot would sometimes
enclose letters from Woolf, Joyce, Spender and others when he wrote to Hale.
As this archive has been sealed for 50 years, presumably that means there
are unpublished letters in there . a job for the VW Bulletin perhaps!

Apologies if this is old news.

Hi all, I am working on a project that requires a copy (or scan) of the
first Mrs D by Hogarth 1925 and the only copies I see anywhere for sale are
exorbitant. Does anyone by some miracle have a scan of the first edition
that could be made available? or know of a poor but adequate reading copy
    for sale?

    I appreciate your help, Leslie
