It’s the NYT writer who is not aware of Reed’s work (not surprising in a journalist, though).

I of course thought of Christopher Reed as well, but the author was the curator at Charleston for twelve years, and probably knows him and certainly knows his work.

I agree the book looks lovely, and I enjoy the photograph of Roger Fry’s pajamas. But I don’t think it’s “the first” and am also thinking of Christopher Reed’s work, among others.

In today’s New York Times, an article on the best recent coffee table books features Wendy Hiitchmough’s The Bloomsbury Look published by Yale UP. It describes it as “the first book to thoroughly unpack the group’s visual aesthetic, from portraits to photographs, fashion design and correspondence.”
