Yes indeed Karen, That's what I was writing about. It's not a virus that
you have to worry about infecting your computer; it's a virus that's
spread by generating increasing numbers of emails. I gave figures showing
how people could each potentially receive 400 emails, but those emails
would come from people who had emailed 20 people, generating 8000 emails
in the system. The next number is 16,000. And given that there are
multiple such "round robins" circulating the overall potential number is
much higher than that.
I'm not suggesting this negative effect is deliberate; the idea may have
originated from someone with excellent motivations who didn't think
through what would evolve. But I seem to remember some years ago a similar
scheme to generate proliferating emails that DID have the intent of
crashing the system.
I think, in this case, enough people are suspicious or reluctant to mean
that it will all just fizzle out. But it's an indication of how we always
have to be on guard.
Speaking of which, I write from Toronto, where being "on guard" and in
lockdown is a constantly reiterated theme. We just HAVE to stay
physically apart. My heart bleeds for New York, and other highly infected
areas. As Woolfians, however, we are never mentally, emotionally,
spiritually apart. Do remember that as we get through these difficult
months.
warmly to all, Melba
