With effect from today, abortion has been decriminalised in Northern Ireland.  This means that the leading case of R. v. Bourne [1938] – superseded in England and Wales in 1967 – will no longer be relevant in the UK.  Mr. Aleck Bourne was the surgeon who performed the abortion on the girl.  He was prosecuted and acquitted.  The judge’s obiter dicta slightly relaxed the strict anti-abortion law then in force.
