Hello, Virginia Woolf's longstanding role as a contributor to the *TLS* was
no incidental aspect of her life. As Woolf herself recalled, in the time
she spent writing for the *TLS*, and for its editor Bruce Richmond (often
as much as a review each week) "I learnt a lot of my craft … how to
compress; how to enliven; & also was made to read with a pen & notebook,
seriously". In time, Woolf became the "jewel in a cohort of reviewers that
included T. S. Eliot, Henry James, Edith Wharton, George Gissing and Andrew
Lang". And though Woolf claimed that "my real delight in reviewing is to
say nasty things", it was her enthusiasm for the work and for the books
that drove her and animated her contributions. In this week's (newly
redesigned) *TLS*, we publish *an extract from Francesca Wade's
introduction to Genius and Ink

*(forthcoming from TLS Books), in which she explores the formative
connections between Virginia Woolf and the "Lit Supp".
