I have been looking at his Wikipedia site – which is remarkably uncritical (and why are only his Indian books listed?) – and I am more confused than ever.

I’m surprised this article is being discussed again after all those years.

See some responses:

Mark reviewed the book in which the article was reprinted: see “Woolf Studies Annual”, Vol. XIII (2007), 208-12.

Oddities: aren’t his book or books on the Raj well thought-of? why chose a pseudonym? because he was a doctor?

"Theodore Dalrymple is a senior fellow at the Manhattan Institute [“a conservative think tank”, said Mark] and a contributing editor of 'City Journal'. He is a retired physician who, most recently, practiced in a British inner-city hospital and prison. Dalrymple has written a column for 'The Spectator' (London) for many years ..."

Why chose a pseudonym that emphasises his relationship to Woolf? Or did he want to emphasise his relationship to the Raj?

His great-great-grandmother was Sophia Pattle.
