 Ah, you saw right through my ploy to drive traffic to the article, Jeremy. Long story short, it is to rhyme to 'pith', because of certain remarks ES made in a letter, slightly irritated with people who pronounced it 'to rhyme with scythe' (VWB 58, May 2018, p. 47).
