That was at the London Conference in 2004; there was a similar plenary at 
Smith in 2003.

Yes, of course it was consciously referring to race, even as a joke. I wrote 
about Bloomsbury and race in my article "Bushmen and Blackface," and gave a 
plenary talk on it at one of the VW conferences.
