[Vwoolf] Tips for teaching The Waves?

Andrea,

Neville (on page 20 in my copy) says "I am a story." I think this is a key
point of this "playpoem" (as Woolf called it). With really genre-defying
texts like this I like to give students a go at doing a creative piece that
in some way mimics the author's project. Having students attempt to write a
description/story of themselves that both takes into account the stories
that others have told about them and the stories they tell about themselves
would really help students to conceptualize and also act out the way Woolf
is attempting to articulate the self as containing multitudes. I find that
putting students in the "creator" role helps them better analyze/discuss
texts. This would also open up the discussion of what Woolf gains by not
using a first-person narrator and what students might see themselves losing
(or gaining!) by using a first-person narrator. Anyway, just some ideas!
