[Vwoolf] Vwoolf Digest, Vol 58, Issue 5

On Friday I went to the Vanessa Bell exhibition at the Dulwich Picture Gallery. I have seen so much of Bell’s art, in both private and public collections, that I expected to mostly see pictures I had encountered before. It was therefore surprisingly to see how many of them were unfamiliar to me. Some were studies for paintings completely later, that we would be familiar with, but also a range of her playing with different styles and influences, decoration, and portraiture. There were familiar ones—Virginia knitting in a chair; Leonard at a desk—but many others as well.  It was an interesting perspective on a very talented painter. It would have been wonderful if the gift shop had sold the exhibition poster! There was a school group going through with a teacher or docent, diligently taking notes, and sitting on the floor.

    The Dulwich Picture Gallery Shop is (to me) more reminiscent of the artifacts sold at the Art of Bloomsbury exhibit at the Yale Center for British Art in 2000 (http://britishart.yale.edu/exhibitions/art-bloomsbury-0) and the Laura Ashley launch/re-launch of the 1987 Charleston House fabrics (in celebration of the 60th anniversary of the company): http://www.lauraashley.com/blog/at-home/bloomsbury-now-and-then/.

    I think Malone is on a different plane--one that is piloted by the semi-illiterate.
