This is the comment from Frances Spalding:

“When I did the Woolf exhibition at the NPG we were regularly assailed with portraits said to be of Woolf as they had her name written on the back. This is not Woolf, and there is nothing other than the name written on the back to link it with her in any way. Anyone who buys it would have to more than half blind!”

Agreed. This may be authenticated as a portrait of VW but the painter has little skill in capturing even a vague likeness

I thought the same! It's nice finding the portrait but it scarcely resembles the VW we know well from photographs.

I wanted to alert you to this newly discovered oil portrait of Virginia Woolf by the French painter Marguerite Darbour (1865-1940).

<mime-attachment.jpg>

Painted c. 1920s

Oil on canvas. 28.5 x 23.5 inches.

Signed and inscribed with title to the revere.

Provenance: The Artist’s Estate; Private collection, Nice

An extremely rare and hitherto unknown portrait of Virginia Woolf from life by the French painter Marguerite Darbour (1865-1940). The work was most likely painted on one of the Woolf's many visits to France during the 1920s and 30s. The portrait remained in a private collection in Nice, France until recently. Marguerite Darbour (1865-1940) exhibited at the Salon des Artistes Indépendants from 1903 and became a member of the Société Nationale des Beaux-Arts in 1922. She specialised in portrait and landscape subjects and had studios in Paris and Cassis.

The Court Gallery are offering the work for sale at £16,500.

Kind regards,
