Today is the centenary.

Have you ever noticed how odd-sounding is that repeated ref. to “the boy Curnow” in “Jacob’s Room”?  Well, I think it’s a ref. to, or echo of, Boy Cornwell, who was mortally wounded at the Battle of Jutland:

Cornwell is almost Cornwall, and Curnow is the Cornish for Cornwall.
