VW’s essay, ‘A Vanished Generation’, opens:

“In Captain Mahan’s biography it is said that Nelson insisted that there was a meaning in all written words, and it is surely an admirable text to hang up in a library.” (E1 239)

I have hunted in Mahan’s bio., but I can’t find this ref. I wonder if perhaps, just perhaps, VW had got confused. Cf. ‘Emerson’s Journals’, where she quoted him: “In good writing, every word means something.” (E1 338)
