Well, my teeth are now like the Somme in there. Age has caught up with my teenage fillings. But enough of my identification with Evan Williams (in JR) “with his toothpick out already”.
In answer to the original question, see DARROCH, Sandra Jobson, "Ottoline: The Life of Lady Ottoline Morrell" (NY: Coward, McCann & Geoghegan, Inc, 1975): “Then there was the matter of his breath. Unfortunately Bertie suffered from acute halitosis,* which made kissing him something of an ordeal. Ottoline couldn’t bring herself to tell him about it and he, lacking for the past nine years anyone to apprise him of the state of the state of his breath, was oblivious to it. There were formidable obstacles to their love.” (p. 102).
*Not to be confused with bromidrosis or phimosis, or other contraceptives.

Since I am spending a great deal of time in the dentist's chair I am loving this conversation. I will be channeling my inner Woolf at my next appointment - David

Dear all,
May I just say that this exchange has brightened a rainy Friday immensely.
Also, when I was first reading her letters and diaries, I began to keep a count of how many teeth Virginia was having extracted. It seemed to me that she was always in a dentist's chair. She delighted in laughing gas as a help. I am a bit ashamed, but also relieved, to say I stopped counting at nine.
A happy weekend to everybody.

A friend said that Ottoline M. commented on Bertrand Russell's halitosis.
Does anyone have insight on this?
Just wondering--
