I had to miss the keynote to return to Denver for my son’s graduation. I’m excited to read this and have just now ordered it. Up till now Rosenbaum’s book was the acknowledged authority.

Best,
Eleanor

Rosemary Ashton gave a brilliant keynote talk at the Woolf conference in Vancouver 2013. Her book is the result of a huge research project into Bloomsbury as an area. It is true she doesn’t say much about Woolf in the book, but Bloomsbury in the 20th century is outside the remit of the research project.

‘By the mid-Victorian years, Bloomsbury had become home to exactly that "aristocracy of intellect" – barristers, writers and professors of a progressive tint – from which the Stephen girls derived their cultural confidence, not to mention the money to pay the rent on 46 Gordon Square. By moving to Bloomsbury they were not so much striking out as coming home.’

Journalistic tosh! None of it “follows”.

By the way, don’t be misled in a Woolfian sense: there are only 5 brief refs to VW in the book.
