Dear Illya

Their is a small reproduction of the photograph (Vita, aged 18, with the bear) on p. 85 of Portrait of a Marriage - Illustrated Edition, London: George Weidenfeld & Nicolson Limited, 1990. Acknowledgements would suggest that the photo belonged to Nigel Ncolson.

Hope this helps.

Stephen

  Subject: [Vwoolf] Vita's Bear?

  Dear Woolfians,

A friend of mine has been searching for the photograph of Vita Sackville-West with her bear Ivan (the terrible), potentially taken at Knole. The bear is mentioned in the footnotes of some editions of Orlando, and in Juliet Nicolson's The Perfect Summer, but I've not been able to locate an actual picture of the bear and was wondering if anyone might have any leads or just more information about this.

  Many thanks and kind regards,
  Illya
