Elisa Kay Sparks asked for this Facebook story to be sent to the listserv:

Virginia Woolf readers know Anne Olivier Bell as the meticulous and knowledgeable editor of VW’s diary, but she had another role just after the Second World War. She was one of the ‘Monuments Men’ who worked to rescue artworks looted by the Nazis. Now 97, AOB is the last surviving member of the group and is celebrated by her fellow Charleston Trustee and Royal Academy Chief Exec Charles Saumarez Smith in a fascinating article.

Why has this story come out now? Well, George Clooney is directing and starring in a film called Monuments Men, to be released in the UK this Christmas. Also with Cate Blanchett and Matt Damon, it has been tipped as a contender for the next Oscars.

However, don’t be fooled by the Guardian’s byline: the headline writer has got the wrong end of the stick. The film is not about AOB herself, but the Monuments, Fine Arts and Archives programme, of which she was a part.
