See “The Royal Academy”, Essays 3 (1988), p. 89:
“for your sake, Alice”

Betcha it comes from “The Pilot”, ch. xiv:

"Not a hair of theirs shall be touched, not a thatch shall blaze, nor shall a sleepless night befall the vilest among them and all for your sake, Alice!”

VW read Fennimore Cooper when she was young.  I’ve no idea what’s going on, and I can’t face reading the book on Gutenberg:
