The “Westminster Gazette” (13 Dec 1919, p. 13) calls this “a distressing womanliness in her use of English (‘after sitting there for some minutes a small girl popped her head . . .’)”.

‘He lit his gas-fire and settled down in gloomy patience to await his dinner. After sitting thus for some minutes a small girl popped her head in to say,

‘"Mother says, aren't you coming down, Ralph? Uncle Joseph---"’

(“Night and Day” [Duckworth, 1919], ch. ii, p. 19 [Harcourt, p. 26])
