*1) COSI's Portal to the Public* program helps researchers develop their
skills in communicating their research with the public. Through meetings in
researchers' labs and during workshops at COSI, participants learn
strategies for engaging with audiences and develop hands-on activities that
will help them share their research with COSI visitors. During its first
year, Portal to the Public has involved over a dozen Ohio State faculty,
staff, and graduate students from across the university.

COSI is recruiting participants for its 2014–15 Portal to the Public
programs. For more information, visit

*2) NSF Presidential Awards for Excellence in Science, Mathematics and
Engineering Mentoring (PAESMEM): *The National Science Foundation has
released a revised solicitation for the PAESMEM program (
http://www.nsf.gov/funding/pgm_summ.jsp?pims_id=5473). From the program
synopsis:

PAESMEM recognizes individuals for their mentoring of persons from
underrepresented racial and ethnic groups, women, persons with
disabilities, persons from disadvantaged socioeconomic backgrounds, and
early career scientists and engineers. Historically underrepresented racial
and ethnic groups in science, technology, engineering and mathematics
(STEM) fields include African-Americans, Hispanic Americans, Native
Americans, Pacific Islanders, Native Hawaiians, and Native Alaskans. These
are groups who might not otherwise have considered or had access to
opportunities in STEM education or careers. Nominations, including
self-nominations, are invited for "Individual" and "Organizational" PAESMEM
awards.

Nominations are due October 3. Frequently Asked Questions are available at
http://www.nsf.gov/pubs/2014/nsf14092/nsf14092.jsp

*3) NSF Research Training Groups in the Mathematical Sciences (RTG):* NSF
has released a revised solicitation for the RTG program (
http://www.nsf.gov/funding/pgm_summ.jsp?pims_id=5732). From the program
synopsis:

The RTG program supports efforts to improve research training by involving
undergraduate students, graduate students, postdoctoral associates, and
faculty members in structured research groups centered on a common research
theme. Research groups supported by RTG must include vertically-integrated
activities that span the entire spectrum of educational levels from
undergraduates through postdoctoral associates.

Awards are up to $500,00/year for 3-5 years. Proposals are due October 14.
