Dear Colleagues,
We invite you to join other Ohio State stakeholders to discuss possible
coordination around the recent announcement of the Department of Labor’s
Youth Career Connect Grant Program. Award funding is expected in the $2 -
$7 million range.
Thursday, December 5, 2013
1:00-3:00 pm
@ TBD
We invite you or your designee to attend this discussion. If you are aware
of other units or projects that should be represented, please contact us to
arrange for additional invitees.
Please read over the announcement at
http://www.doleta.gov/ycc/pdf/Youth_Career_Connect_SGA_13-01.pdf and come
prepared to discuss.
We are in communication with the program officer for clarification about
limited submission status. But even if Ohio State would be able to serve
as the lead applicant on more than one proposal, it is probably in all of
our best interests to find possible synergies and coordinate proposals.
Given that context, we have begun to identify projects whose goals may
align with those of the grant program:
· K-16 school transformation projects that include:
o Integrated Academic and Career-Focused Learning
o Work-Based Learning and Exposure to the World of Work
o Robust Employer Engagement
o Individualized Career and Academic Counseling
o Integration of Post-Secondary Education and Training.
Please note that proposals must include at least one partner from each
category:
- Local or State Workforce Investment Board (Ohio's state version is
Jobs and Family Services)
- Local Education Agency: school district or educational service center
(A Columbus City Schools representative will attend this meeting. Some
of Ohio State's current partnerships around school
transformation/STEM/early college schools include Metro STEM Early
College High School and Springfield Global Impact STEM Academy. In
addition, ODEE is working with Columbus City Schools on a Digital First
project with students and teachers in four high schools. PACT and OSUMC are
in discussions with Columbus City Schools around a feeder pattern
transformation for Near East Side Health Sciences Academies.)
- Employers or Consortia of Employers in the areas targeted by this
program: *STEM*, *finance and insurance*, education services,
*manufacturing*, *information science*, *health care.* (The bolded
industries also align with the State of Ohio has targeted for growth and
therefore, with the Board of Regents-funded Ohio Means Jobs and Internships
program or OMIC. Ohio State is the lead institution on a current OMIC
program, partnering with Columbus State and North Central State.)
- Institution of Higher Education
If you are involved in a project that aligns with the Youth Career Connect
program, please send us a several sentence summary before the December 5
meeting.
