Hey So Meaners,

I wanted to encourage you all to plan to attend the newly returned SpeerLab (aka Psycholinguistics Laboratory Discussion Group) this fall, and to sign up for it if you are able to do so. Those of you who were around for SpeerLab before don’t need any convincing, I know, but for the newer students: SpeerLab has been the primary group for experimentalists within the department, across the subfields. Anyone working on an experiment has been able to bring ideas, workshop materials, discuss data analysis and get valuable suggestions. Even if you would not classify the work you do as psycholinguistics, this group is extremely useful, as well as being very relaxed and welcoming. I am personally over the moon that it’s returning, and I hope to see many of you there!

Kathryn

Subject: [Ling-Faculty] Psycholinguistics Lab Discussion Group, AU 2020

Dear Colleagues,

The Psycholinguistics Laboratory Discussion Group will meet this semester on Fridays from 2:15pm to 3:35pm. I have agreed to offer the course in hybrid format, but do not know as yet where the in-person portion will be scheduled to meet, so this will be announced later. Topics discussed at lab meetings vary, but include joint reading and discussion of selected articles, practice presentations, psycholinguistic experimental design trouble-shooting sessions, and reports of on-going research by lab members and guests.

I hope to keep the course content and the interaction among group members as close to past years as is possible given our unprecedented circumstances, and with the expectation that those who wish or need to attend from a remote location will be welcome to do so.

Our first meeting this semester will be August 28th. Everyone interested in participating is welcome to attend this organizational meeting. If you would like to present your work to the group, but can't come at this date and time, please contact me before the meeting to facilitate scheduling. Students who plan to attend the course should register for at least 1 hour of credit in Ling 7890.07. If you have concerns about participatory requirements, please discuss this w/ me directly.

By tradition, there is cooperative snack provision. Sadly, this tradition is suspended until further notice.
