Subject: OSU|DH: New Slack Channel & Upcoming Events

OSU|DH Slack
In order to improve communication within our DH community about events, funding opportunities, CFPs, webinars, etc., I’ve created a new Slack workspace—OSU|DH. I encourage you all to join and contribute: https://join.slack.com/t/osu-dh/signup. The Slack workspace will allow us to

  *   post information and links
  * categorize posts by topic in channels (you only join those pertinent to you)
  * send direct messages to other members
  * setup (or mute) notifications for new posts
  * browse via the desktop or mobile app whenever you have time to spare
Moving forward, Slack will serve as the digital hub for our entire campus DH community – faculty and graduate students—and the primary tool I’ll use to disseminate information to the community (i.e. I will no longer be sending emails of this nature). I welcome your input about new channels you’d like to see in the workspace—like a “collaborators wanted” channel. Please feel free to share the link with anyone who may be interested.

DH Forums
This semester, we have two DH Forums scheduled for faculty:
Funding Projects Wednesday, 21 March, 3:00–4:30, 352 Research Commons (3rd floor, 18th Avenue Library)
The first in our DH Forum series, this panel discussion focuses on finding and securing funding for digital research projects. Attendees are encouraged to contribute to the discussion, sharing their own experiences and tips for success. Panel participants include Brian Joseph (Professor of Linguistics and Kenneth E. Naylor Professor of South Slavic Linguistics), Jeff Agnoli (Senior Staff Training and Development Specialist), Leanda Rix (Executive Director of Foundation Relations), and Kristina Ward (ASC Grants Development Specialist).

Collaboration & Credit Thursday, 19 April, 3:00–4:30, 352 Research Commons (3rd floor, 18th Avenue Library)
The second in this semester’s DH Forum series, this panel discussion focuses on the benefits and challenges of working with collaborators on projects and determining how to credit those collaborators’ contributions. (Information about panelists forthcoming.)

NVivo Working Group
This informal working group aims to bring together faculty and graduate students from all disciplines who are either using or interested in using NVivo for their research to share tips, ask questions, and discuss the platform’s many features. The upcoming meetings (3/29, 4/26, 5/24) are from 3:00 to 4:30 in 350A Research Commons (3rd floor, 18th Avenue Library).

Research Commons Workshops
Two upcoming workshops in the Research Commons may be of interest to you and/or your students:
Publishing Multimedia Projects with Scalar
Thursday, March 22, 3:00–4:30
Scalar is an open source scholarly publishing platform that allows users to integrate images, audio, and video with their text. In addition, it gives users control of the structure of their project, providing options for nested, recursive, and non-linear formats. In this workshop, Harmony Bench (Associate Professor of Dance History and Theory) will introduce the platform, discuss its capabilities and limitations, and guide participants through getting started with their own project. Participants are encouraged to visit http://scalar.usc.edu/works/system/register to create an account before the workshop. Register: https://library.osu.edu/researchcommons/event/scalar-publishing-sp18/

Building Digital Archives, Collections, and Exhibits with Omeka and Omeka S
Wednesday, April 18, 3:00–4:30
Omeka and Omeka S are open source web publishing platforms for building digital archives, collections, and exhibits. Users have the ability to add image, audio, and video files to their projects and describe the items with structured metadata. In this workshop, Digital Humanities Librarian Leigh Bonds will introduce the platform, discuss its capabilities and limitations, and guide participants through getting started with their own project. Participants are encouraged to visit https://www.omeka.net/signup sign-up for an Omeka trial before the workshop or bookmark access the Omeka S sandbox https://omeka.org/s/. Register: https://library.osu.edu/researchcommons/event/omeka-sp18/

DH Working Group (DHWG)
Recently formed, the graduate student DHWG provides a forum for discussing and exploring all things DH. The group is member-centered and member-directed. Once we have the group structure in place, meetings will be held twice a month on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 5:30 to 7:00, and snacks will be provided. Our next meeting is tentatively scheduled for 22 March, 5:30-7:00; we’re planning to Skype with other graduate student DH working groups to get ideas on what they do, how they’re run, and what benefits the students find they have. If you have any students with any interests in DH, send them our way.

Project Consultations
If you have a digital research project in mind or would like to integrate a DH project into your class(es), please email me to schedule a time to meet (or if you use Outlook calendar, just find an open spot on my calendar and send me an invite). I can help with anything from refining project scope to determining best methods/tools to structuring/managing data. I can also help with navigating the various resources available to you at OSU.

As always, please share with interested colleagues and students.

Warm regards,
Leigh
