Linguistics 5603: Sociolinguistic Field Methods

Tuesdays & Thursdays 12:45-2:05

Experience or some coursework in sociolinguistics recommended.


This course introduces students to the collection of data in sociolinguistics, focusing primarily on the traditions of sociolinguistic variation and language attitudes. Students will collect data using a range of methods, including surveys, anonymous interaction, public observation, the sociolinguistic interview and ethnographically-oriented interviews. Data processing techniques including transcription, will also be discussed. Students will complete regular homework assignments and corresponding reflections, as well as a final project which will present a design for data collection for a relevant study.
