> Conversations about chronic illnesses, diseases running in the patient’s family, as well as specific medical record questions are frequent in medical encounters. In the United States, as in most countries, these conversations frequently occur between culturally and linguistically diverse patients and providers and, many times, an interpreter brokers them. In this presentation Professor Angelelli discusses the meaning of “chronic” among the interlocutors, and the way in which they orchestrate team efforts to de-construct and re-construct the notion of chronic illnesses. The data raises questions on literacy and register as they travel across languages and cultures. This study has practical and theoretical implications for cross-cultural communication and medical translation/interpreting literacies in general and for the education of healthcare interpreters and health care providers in particular.

> Since many of the bilingual students/heritage speakers in our classrooms today were family translators and interpreters in their late childhood and adolescence, getting a glimpse into their lives and experiences may help researchers and teachers understand the habits and ideology of these individuals who may populate classrooms and bilingual workplaces in the future. In addition, research on bilingual youngsters and children brokering communication for adults allows us to problematize the constructs of language access and language policies of the societies these bilinguals inhabit. In this seminar we will analyze the ways in which bilinguals living on the US/Mexico border characterize and discuss their experiences as communication brokers. The results have theoretical and practical implications for current characterizations of multilingual societies, especially in border areas, and for the teaching, learning and testing of languages and literacies.

Angelelli is Professor and Chair of Multilingualism and Communication at Heriot-Watt University, Edinburgh, Scotland and Professor Emerita of Spanish Linguistics at San Diego State University. Her research lies at the intersection of sociolinguistics, applied linguistics and translation and interpreting studies. She is the author of Medical Interpreting and Cross-cultural Communication (Cambridge University Press 2004), and Revisiting the Role of the Interpreter (John Benjamins 2004) and the co-editor of Researching Translation and Interpreting (Routledge 2015) and Testing and Assessment in Translation and Interpreting Studies (John Benjamins 2009 c/ed.). Professor Angelelli is the President of the American Translation and Interpreting Studies Association.
