Subject: [Sbigml] Lecture on Trait Inference, Transference,
     and Discounting (Dr. Don Carlston)

The OSU Social Psychology program is pleased to announce that Dr. Donal
Carlston of Purdue University will be giving a talk this Thursday, March
21st at 4:00PM in the Psychology Building room 035.  Dr. Carlston will give
a talk titled "The effects of others’ behaviors on impressions of group
members: Trait inference, transference and discounting." (Abstract below).

Accompanying this invitation is a flyer about the lecture. We sincerely hope
you will be able to attend!

Abstract:Impressions of individual group members are affected by the
behaviors of others in their social groups.  Thus, for example, the acts of
a single member of a sports team may color impressions of all of her
teammates, and the effect may be even larger when multiple team members join
in the act.  In my talk, a series of studies will be reported examining such
contamination both of those group members who do, and those who do not, join
in a trait-implying behavior.  Factors examined include group entativity,
behavior valence, and the number of group members who engage in the
behavior.  Results are interpreted in terms of processes previously
hypothesized to underlie spontaneous trait inference and spontaneous trait
transference.
