Seminar on sociolinguistic indexicality
Linguistics 861
MW 1:30-3:18

Approaches to sociolinguistic variation that privilege social meaning use
as a key construct the indexical relationship, through which linguistic
forms index, or point to, social structures like identities, stances and
speech acts. This course will explore the sociolinguistic indexical
relationship from a range of perspectives, drawing on work in
sociolinguistics, linguistic anthropology, psycholinguistics and social
cognition. We will engage with the question of how indexical relationships
are formed and/or changed over time, how they are used and received in
interaction and what cognitive processes allow individuals to learn,
produce and comprehend indexically meaningful forms.
