Experimental Details
Review the window notes and any associated equipment guides for additional details. Please refer to the Week 7 edition<https://lists.osu.edu/pipermail/preplabstudents/2026-February/000338.html> for details on STR and LCP.
STO
TA demo kits include a jar of sand for smothering a Mg fire if it gets out of control. To be clear, the jar of sand should only be used in an emergency. If the TA cannot find the magnesium strips, they should check the cart, the hood, and the box containing the other items needed for the demonstration.
CYC
TAs will pick up samples of CuO at the start of lab. These will be kept in the labeled bin on the unknown shelf. Unknown bins should not be removed from the unknown shelf. Only hand out full sets of unknowns to TAs. Any leftovers should be properly disposed of by the TA at the end of the lab session.
IHT
Cups and lids will be in the red dispensers by the balances. We’re going to use quite a few weigh boats, cup and lids- so be sure to keep a close eye on these. Additional cups and lids are behind the whiteboards now.
SAL
Solids will be distributed to TAs from the lab support window before the start of lab. Additional colorless empty microcentrifuge tubes are stored behind the marker boards. Only emptied and rinsed centrifuge tubes should be placed in the blue bucket. Blue buckets should be swapped out during waste runs if they are more than half full. If you see any leftover tubes of solids on the reagent carts when doing your checks, please give them to the window- window people, please put them in the “partial unknown sets” bin.
GAS
Each TA will pick up a large bag containing Alka-Seltzer, antacids, and small empty bags. It’s ok for students to ask for an additional package of Alka-Seltzer at the window for Part C. We’ve switched to generic Alka-Seltzer. The white tablets in the paper/foil packet are Alka-Seltzer and the colored tablets in the zip top bag are antacid. Extra tubing for the gas collection apparatus will be available in the window. The barometers in each room are near the thermostat (on the same wall as Hood B). There are extra ring stands in each room between the ADA sink and Hood A.
BAR
The spectrometers use the same power cord as the hot plates. There is a “broken UV-Vis” cart in the window. Please place any broken UV-Vis on this cart immediately as they are reported. As always with anything broken, please put a broken item sticker on it describing the issue. When doing the cart check for this experiment, please swap all allura red bottles. We can check and refill them down in the lab.
Other Information
Lab Coats
If you haven’t replaced your lab coat in the last few weeks, please do so.
Headphones
I’ve seen some headphone use recently. Please remember we do not allow headphone use while on the clock. This is a safety issue.
Discrimination and Harassment Training
You have until the beginning of spring break to complete this training module. As of right now, only about half of our students have done so.
Work Appropriate Conversations and Use of Time
Please keep all conversations professional and work-appropriate, regardless of the floor you are on or who you are speaking with. Casual conversation is fine while completing assigned tasks, but it must not distract from your responsibilities. Speaking negatively about coworkers—staff or fellow students—is not acceptable under any circumstances and undermines the professionalism we expect.
Time spent socializing, particularly at the window, in the hallways, or in the teaching labs, must be kept to a minimum. Extended conversations in these areas interfere with productivity and customer service expectations. Your priority during each shift is to complete assigned duties efficiently and support the overall operation of the lab.
If you need to step out briefly—for example, to pick up food or take a phone call—that is permitted. However, it must be brief, and you are required to notify us when you leave the building during your shift and when you return. This is a safety requirement, so we always know who is present in the lab spaces.
If you have concerns about the fairness of assigned tasks or how work is being distributed, bring them directly to me. I am happy to discuss them, but concerns must be addressed through the appropriate channel rather than through conversations with others.
