From weaver.646 at osu.edu Sun Mar 1 19:21:29 2026 From: weaver.646 at osu.edu (Weaver, Tyler) Date: Mon, 2 Mar 2026 00:21:29 +0000 Subject: [Prep Lab Students] Spring 2026- Week 8 Message-ID: The Weekly Mix Volume: Spring 2026 | Edition: Week 8 Schedule We?re only 2 weeks away from spring break! [image.png] Experimental Details Review the window notes and any associated equipment guides for additional details. Please refer to the Week 7 edition for details on STR and LCP. STO TA demo kits include a jar of sand for smothering a Mg fire if it gets out of control. To be clear, the jar of sand should only be used in an emergency. If the TA cannot find the magnesium strips, they should check the cart, the hood, and the box containing the other items needed for the demonstration. CYC TAs will pick up samples of CuO at the start of lab. These will be kept in the labeled bin on the unknown shelf. Unknown bins should not be removed from the unknown shelf. Only hand out full sets of unknowns to TAs. Any leftovers should be properly disposed of by the TA at the end of the lab session. IHT Cups and lids will be in the red dispensers by the balances. We?re going to use quite a few weigh boats, cup and lids- so be sure to keep a close eye on these. Additional cups and lids are behind the whiteboards now. SAL Solids will be distributed to TAs from the lab support window before the start of lab. Additional colorless empty microcentrifuge tubes are stored behind the marker boards. Only emptied and rinsed centrifuge tubes should be placed in the blue bucket. Blue buckets should be swapped out during waste runs if they are more than half full. If you see any leftover tubes of solids on the reagent carts when doing your checks, please give them to the window- window people, please put them in the ?partial unknown sets? bin. GAS Each TA will pick up a large bag containing Alka-Seltzer, antacids, and small empty bags. It?s ok for students to ask for an additional package of Alka-Seltzer at the window for Part C. We?ve switched to generic Alka-Seltzer. The white tablets in the paper/foil packet are Alka-Seltzer and the colored tablets in the zip top bag are antacid. Extra tubing for the gas collection apparatus will be available in the window. The barometers in each room are near the thermostat (on the same wall as Hood B). There are extra ring stands in each room between the ADA sink and Hood A. BAR The spectrometers use the same power cord as the hot plates. There is a ?broken UV-Vis? cart in the window. Please place any broken UV-Vis on this cart immediately as they are reported. As always with anything broken, please put a broken item sticker on it describing the issue. When doing the cart check for this experiment, please swap all allura red bottles. We can check and refill them down in the lab. Other Information Lab Coats If you haven?t replaced your lab coat in the last few weeks, please do so. Headphones I?ve seen some headphone use recently. Please remember we do not allow headphone use while on the clock. This is a safety issue. Discrimination and Harassment Training You have until the beginning of spring break to complete this training module. As of right now, only about half of our students have done so. Work Appropriate Conversations and Use of Time Please keep all conversations professional and work-appropriate, regardless of the floor you are on or who you are speaking with. Casual conversation is fine while completing assigned tasks, but it must not distract from your responsibilities. Speaking negatively about coworkers?staff or fellow students?is not acceptable under any circumstances and undermines the professionalism we expect. Time spent socializing, particularly at the window, in the hallways, or in the teaching labs, must be kept to a minimum. Extended conversations in these areas interfere with productivity and customer service expectations. Your priority during each shift is to complete assigned duties efficiently and support the overall operation of the lab. If you need to step out briefly?for example, to pick up food or take a phone call?that is permitted. However, it must be brief, and you are required to notify us when you leave the building during your shift and when you return. This is a safety requirement, so we always know who is present in the lab spaces. If you have concerns about the fairness of assigned tasks or how work is being distributed, bring them directly to me. I am happy to discuss them, but concerns must be addressed through the appropriate channel rather than through conversations with others. General Chemistry Prep Lab ? We do not anticipate the prep lab being open for student employees over spring break. Please take some time to rest and recharge. [image.png] Experimental Details Review the window notes and any associated equipment guides for additional details. Please refer the Week 8 edition for details on STO and SAL. CAR TAs will be picking up glucose test strips from the windows. These are light and moisture sensitive and are kept in the desiccators on the bench within the lab support window. To open the desiccator, unlatch the three latches and swing the door open. Do the reverse to close the desiccator. Let us know if you have any trouble. The glucose test strips are expensive, so we WILL accept unused strips back. Please place these back into the desiccator in the pink ?EXTRAS? bag. These should only be handed out if extras are needed. Never give a TA a partial set. They should be picking up a full class set at the beginning of the lab session. LLT Blue square carboys of 0.44 M NaOH will be swapped out during the lab readiness checks by those completing them. When swapping out the blue carboys, check the fill level of the spill tray. Let us know if it?s more than half full. Partially filled bottles of lemon and lime juice should be placed in the fridge. We will periodically combine these and mark their caps with a line. When doing a gather, please check the fridge first for full bottles of lemon and lime juice. If you need more than what is available in the fridge, please grab new bottles from aisle 28. No partial bottles of lemon or lime juice should be left in aisle 28. Unopened bottles of lemon and lime juice (should have unmarked caps) from cart checks should be placed back on the shelf in aisle 28. EMS These will be set up on the bench beside Hood A. Replacement parts are available in the window. The power supplies and discharge tubes are new, but the spectrometers are the same. SST If a lab indicates they don?t have enough meters and probes, be sure they are planning to work in pairs. pH meters, probes, and cables to connect the two, are on the bench closest to Hood A. There could be a few rooms with old (black cable) probes, most rooms will have new (white wire) probes. The probes with the black cables will need to be attached to the top of the meters whereas the new white wire probes will need to be attached to the probe and meter via the white wire. Connections are made on the top of the meter by pushing and turning (BNC type). Both pH probe types will have either a black o-ring or blue rubber piece at the top of the probe shaft to cushion it from the glass storage tube and help seal in the storage solution. These should stay at the top of the probes while the students are taking readings. If a student claims their pH meter is ?broken?, they should have their TA try to calibrate it before bringing it to the window for an exchange. Emma has prepared a guide on how to handle pH meter issues; everyone is required to review it and initial the roster on the wall by Keyth. It will be available in the window and the prep lab office. HCAL Students and TAs have been instructed to use a program called Graphical Analysis. It can be downloaded from go.osu.edu/graphicalanalysis. GoTemp! Probes are on the bench by Hood A. USB adapters are also available, if needed. Sarah, Emma, or I will take care of the unknown environment which will be setup in Hood A. All metals and the battery prototypes will be on the reagent cart. CLK Extra thermometers and replacement batteries will be in the window. This one usually uses a bunch of spill kits. Keep a close eye on your spill kits and request replacements as needed. The window playbook has been updated with guidance on when to replace lab coats that have reagents spilled on them- please review it. Other Information Gathers We saw several errors with gathers this week. The incorrect concentration or incorrect volume was pulled. Please be sure you are paying attention to these details when gathering materials. This can have a big impact on the students? experiments. Eyewash Testing We?re going to transition eyewash testing to be a One-An-Hour option for Mondays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays. Two rooms will count for one hour. We have a green laminated sheet on the Daily Sheet board. Please cross out completed rooms so we know what still needs to be completed. If you have any questions, please speak with Sarah, Emma, or Tyler. Discrimination and Harassment Training The deadline to complete this is fast approaching!
