The Weekly Mix
Volume: Spring 2026 | Edition: Week 3
Schedule

As you hopefully have heard by now, in-person classes are canceled on Monday 1/26 and Tuesday 1/27. As of right now, we will plan to have lab in person on Wednesday 1/28. Carts will need placed into their Wednesday morning positions when we open on Wednesday. Schedule for the week is below.

Experimental Details

Review the window notes and any associated equipment guides for additional details. Please refer to last week’s edition<https://lists.osu.edu/pipermail/preplabstudents/2026-January/000327.html> for details on DPR, and INK.

MSR
We have a bin for broken burets, in some cases we can salvage them. (List price is ~$200 per buret) Please keep any pipet pumps that have broken off pipets in them or are leaking in the designated bin- we may be able to salvage them. Details on where the place these broken items are available in the window notes.

MGB

Model kits will be provided on the bench beside Hood A. Replacement parts are available in both windows if needed.

CPC

Emma and Sarah setup the stills in 210, 220, and 230 on Friday. We did not anticipate campus being closed on Tuesday, so rooms 240, 250, and 260 do not yet have stills setup. I will plan to tackle these as early as possible on Wednesday morning.

The distillation apparatus needs to be unplugged when not in use. Ideally, the water pump and heating mantle should be plugged in and turned on about 10-15 minutes before the lab session starts. The apparatus needs to be checked at least every 30 minutes by someone from the lab support window. Set a timer for 30 minutes to remind yourselves. This video shows how to add ice and transfer water from the receiving flask to the heating flask (still pot) properly<https://youtu.be/a8J57oDHy_I>. You must watch this video prior to the start of CPC. Remember the end of both pieces of tubing (from the condenser and to the condenser) should be inside the bucket.

If you need to stop heating the flask for any reason, turn the heating mantle off and lower it away from the flask. This is why we set them up so high- it makes it easier to kill the heat quickly.

SOL

Remember that 15-mL tubes are now behind the whiteboards. We’re going to be using vortex mixers for this experiment. These have been placed at each snorkel, so each room only has 7. They are touch activated, so pushing the capped tube on the inner cone starts the mixer. We may have a learning curve here. Please collect emptied green 15-mL falcon tube racks in the designated bin in the lab support window. The blue buckets for this experiment will be kept in Hood A to help manage the pentanol odor.

LCP

Students will be using ice toward the end of lab. We do not provide scoops for ice, instead students should use an empty beaker from their drawer. At least one glove should be removed when walking through the hallway. If students are in the hallway with two gloved hands, please gently ask them to remove one glove. Additional commentary is not necessary.

Other Information

Lab Manuals

We will continue to leave boxes of lab manuals in the labs until Monday sections actually have a chance to meet.

Window Notes

Please be sure you are reading the window notes… Even if you’ve been around awhile. We’re seeing questions in the GroupMe that are clearly answered in the window notes.

One-A-Days Name Update

One-a-days will now be called “One-an-hours” to better reflect the expectation that they are not a one and done, but rather one per hour. The instructional text on the Daily Sheet has been updated to the following: "On any day you work and are not assigned to the lab support window for your entire shift, you are expected to complete one task from the list below for each hour you are not scheduled in the window. You may choose any task(s) from the list and may repeat the same task if desired. Tasks can be completed at any time during your shift; they do not need to be done all at once. After completing tasks, write your name and the number of times you completed each task on the Daily Sheet Board.”

Waste Protocol Updates

Lab debris waste in the blue barrels near oxidizers table will be sealed by Sarah or Emma once they become full. Sarah or Emma will also replace the blue barrel with a new labeled one. We will no longer have separate barrels for plastic and paper. We will still have designated barrels for glass.

Prep Lab Staff Meetings

It’s ok to walk through the office while the staff are meeting. We usually meet on Tuesdays at 2, but it can get moved around as life gets in the way.
