From weaver.646 at osu.edu Fri Jan 9 13:42:15 2026 From: weaver.646 at osu.edu (Weaver, Tyler) Date: Fri, 9 Jan 2026 18:42:15 +0000 Subject: [Prep Lab Students] Spring 2026- Week 1 Message-ID: The Weekly Mix Volume: Autumn 2026 | Edition: Week 1 Schedule Only Chem 1208 will have lab next week. We?ll use the remainder of the week finishing or preparations for the semester. [image.png] Experimental Details Review the window notes and any associated equipment guides for additional details. Open House (OPH) Goggles have been placed in lab rooms. Lab Manuals will not be here in time for this lab session. Printed materials will be in the windows and will be picked up by the TAs. Other Information Spring Schedule I have now condensed the schedule into the week of January 12th. Please take one last look at the schedule to be sure it works for you. Attached is a PDF showing where additional assistance would be desired. These are indicated by the cells labeled ?open? with small numbers on the right; higher numbers reflect greater need. If you have the availability and bandwidth to add any of these times, please let me know. Abandoned Glassware I want to provide some clarification on cleaning up abandoned glassware. For the spring semester, the TAs and Head TAs are responsible for noticing and collecting glassware and equipment that was abandoned in the lab rooms at the beginning and end of lab sessions. We?ll continue to have a once per day abandoned glassware check as personnel is available. We will have a form that goes with this check, notes will be made on what items were found and where in each room. This form will be forwarded to the Lab Supervisors by Tyler. Calling 911 To better support you when calling 911, we?ve developed a form that should be used as a guide each time a call is placed. Please write directly on the form and place it in the incident report bin when everything is resolved. We will attach this form to the incident report for record keeping purposes. Lab Coats Please change out your lab coat during their first shift. Place your used lab coat, without a bag, into the beige bin by the shower. Grab a new lab coat from the top shelf in aisle 25. If you want to go up a size to accommodate your bulkier winter clothing, that?s fine. Let us know if we don?t any of the size you want. PPE Bins Please organize your PPE bins. Throw out any trash. If you have 70 pens and 8 box cutters, and 5 pairs of goggles, maybe consider reducing the quantity you have?. If you are missing a name tag, let us know. Breaks When working on prep tasks, such as those we?ll be doing next week, and the stuff we were doing right before break, please work for 50 minutes, then take a 10 minute break. We?ve been seeing breaks lasting 30-45 minutes, which is not appropriate. Goggles If students need goggles that fit over their glasses, they can swap their ?normal? goggles at the window for a pair of OTG goggles. This semester, we will be using the Fisher clear as our standard OTG goggle. If the OTG goggles still don?t work, we have a number of other options they can try. These are in a small white bucket in each window. These goggles should be cleaned with the provided alcohol wipes before students try them on. Students in Chem 1110, 1208, 1210, and 1250 will receive a free pair of goggles from their Lab TA. If a student in a different Gen Chem course has never taken a chemistry course on OSU?s Columbus campus, they may stop by the window and get a pair of goggles for free. If they have taken chemistry on the Columbus campus before and do not have the goggles they were previously provided with, they?ll need to purchase a new pair from Chem Stores, 180 Celeste. Everyone should be keeping an eye out for goggle box and lab coat packaging on the ground and benches. Please help keep our trash under control by picking up anything you see. Replace the bags in the blue recycling barrels as necessary. Extra trash bags are available in both windows. Emptied large cardboard boxes should be broken down and placed in the hallway for recycling. General Chemistry Prep Lab ? Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry ? Labs will begin on Tuesday. [image.png] Experimental Details Review the window notes and any associated equipment guides for additional details. DPR TAs should not need to pick up anything from the lab support window. Please see the notes below about glassware (pipets, pipet pumps, & burets), goggles, and lab manuals. WRM TAs should not need to pick up anything from the lab support window. We?ll keep a box of extra WRM pipets in the window on the bench. Please use this if a room runs out prior to the next cart check. When completing cart check gathers, please be sure you are only grabbing FULL beakers of plastic pipets. Please see the notes below about glassware (pipets, pipet pumps, & burets), goggles, and lab manuals. Because of the long weekend, we have not yet put the sodium alginate on the 1208, 1210, and 1250 carts. We will put it out on Tuesday morning. The solution being a bit cold should not present any significant issues. INK TAs will be picking up INK unknowns from the lab support window. Remember that unknowns will be kept in the plastic boxes on the unknown/handouts shelf. Do not give out unknowns to students. We have put some extras of each pen, pencils, and blank chromatography paper in both windows just in case they are needed. Be prepared to give out 50-mL volumetric flasks. Please see the notes below about glassware (pipets, pipet pumps, & burets), goggles, and lab manuals. Other Information Goggles If students need goggles that fit over their glasses, they can swap their ?normal? goggles at the window for a pair of OTG goggles. Replace the bags in the blue recycling barrels as necessary. Extra trash bags are available in both windows. Emptied cardboard boxes should be broken down and placed in the hallway for recycling. Lab Manuals Boxes of lab manuals have been dropped off in each lab room. The boxes are stacked on the floor against the wall closest to Hood B. Each box has already been cut open for easy access. Emptied boxes should be broken down and placed in the hallway for recycling. Towards the end of the week, we may need to redistribute boxes between rooms to account for enrollment variances. If any of the lab manual covers were accidentally cut when the boxes were opened, set them aside, we can tape them and use them for TAs. Pipets, Pipet Pumps, & Burets Be prepared to direct students to the window cart for pipets, pipet pumps, and burets. Pipet pumps that ?leak? and pipet pumps that have glass broken off in them should be collected in the designated bin. What?s New in the Window Emma has prepared an informational notice describing the changes that have been made to the window and its operations. You are required to read this during your first window shift. Security- Locking Doors When closing a floor, be sure that all labs are locked up. If there are two people assigned to the window, one person should lock the lab doors, the other person should later check that they are all truly locked. If a lab is not being used, it needs to be locked. If you are completing a task that necessitates unlocking a room, please relock the room when you leave it. We cannot leave the prep lab unlocked and unattended. If you are the last person in the office/lab and need to go somewhere please have someone come down to babysit the lab or grab key #1 in Keyth and lock up while you are gone. If Sarah and/or Emma dismiss the student employees before returning to the lab at the end of the day, the students should lock the door into the office and the door into the lab before heading out. Timesheets Please be sure you have submitted your timesheet for last week no later than noon on Monday. General Chemistry Prep Lab ? Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry ? We will continue to plan on opening the prep lab and following our normal schedule as long as the University remains open. CHEM 1210 will need stills for CPC on Tuesday. Emma and Sarah will set up the stills in rooms 210, 220, and 230 this afternoon, and will set up rooms 240, 250, and 260 on Tuesday night. The 1210 cart change (switching from one experiment to another) is normally scheduled for Friday afternoons, so the chemicals will already be set up by Monday/Tuesday. I had planned to turn the ice machines on Monday, but will do so today instead, just to be safe. CHEM 1220 normally has a cart change scheduled for Monday. As a precaution, we will place the SOL reagents on the bottom of the 1220 carts today. If we have class on Monday, the reagents will be out of the way on the bottom of the carts. If classes are canceled on Monday, the reagents will already be in the rooms for Tuesday morning. My crew can then remove the INK materials on Tuesday and move the SOL reagents to the top of the carts. Please let me know if you have any questions or concerns. As of right now, we will plan to have lab in person on Wednesday 1/28. Carts will need placed into their Wednesday morning positions when we open on Wednesday. Schedule for the week is below. [image.png] Experimental Details Review the window notes and any associated equipment guides for additional details. Please refer to last week?s edition for details on DPR, and INK. MSR We have a bin for broken burets, in some cases we can salvage them. (List price is ~$200 per buret) Please keep any pipet pumps that have broken off pipets in them or are leaking in the designated bin- we may be able to salvage them. Details on where the place these broken items are available in the window notes. MGB Model kits will be provided on the bench beside Hood A. Replacement parts are available in both windows if needed. CPC Emma and Sarah setup the stills in 210, 220, and 230 on Friday. We did not anticipate campus being closed on Tuesday, so rooms 240, 250, and 260 do not yet have stills setup. I will plan to tackle these as early as possible on Wednesday morning. The distillation apparatus needs to be unplugged when not in use. Ideally, the water pump and heating mantle should be plugged in and turned on about 10-15 minutes before the lab session starts. The apparatus needs to be checked at least every 30 minutes by someone from the lab support window. Set a timer for 30 minutes to remind yourselves. This video shows how to add ice and transfer water from the receiving flask to the heating flask (still pot) properly. You must watch this video prior to the start of CPC. Remember the end of both pieces of tubing (from the condenser and to the condenser) should be inside the bucket. If you need to stop heating the flask for any reason, turn the heating mantle off and lower it away from the flask. This is why we set them up so high- it makes it easier to kill the heat quickly. SOL Remember that 15-mL tubes are now behind the whiteboards. We?re going to be using vortex mixers for this experiment. These have been placed at each snorkel, so each room only has 7. They are touch activated, so pushing the capped tube on the inner cone starts the mixer. We may have a learning curve here. Please collect emptied green 15-mL falcon tube racks in the designated bin in the lab support window. The blue buckets for this experiment will be kept in Hood A to help manage the pentanol odor. LCP Students will be using ice toward the end of lab. We do not provide scoops for ice, instead students should use an empty beaker from their drawer. At least one glove should be removed when walking through the hallway. If students are in the hallway with two gloved hands, please gently ask them to remove one glove. Additional commentary is not necessary. Other Information Lab Manuals We will continue to leave boxes of lab manuals in the labs until Monday sections actually have a chance to meet. Window Notes Please be sure you are reading the window notes? Even if you?ve been around awhile. We?re seeing questions in the GroupMe that are clearly answered in the window notes. One-A-Days Name Update One-a-days will now be called ?One-an-hours? to better reflect the expectation that they are not a one and done, but rather one per hour. The instructional text on the Daily Sheet has been updated to the following: "On any day you work and are not assigned to the lab support window for your entire shift, you are expected to complete one task from the list below for each hour you are not scheduled in the window. You may choose any task(s) from the list and may repeat the same task if desired. Tasks can be completed at any time during your shift; they do not need to be done all at once. After completing tasks, write your name and the number of times you completed each task on the Daily Sheet Board.? Waste Protocol Updates Lab debris waste in the blue barrels near oxidizers table will be sealed by Sarah or Emma once they become full. Sarah or Emma will also replace the blue barrel with a new labeled one. We will no longer have separate barrels for plastic and paper. We will still have designated barrels for glass. Prep Lab Staff Meetings It?s ok to walk through the office while the staff are meeting. We usually meet on Tuesdays at 2, but it can get moved around as life gets in the way.
