She is a valued member of our work family, and we want to let her know we are all thinking of her. I?ll have a large sympathy card in the Prep Lab office all next week for anyone who would like to sign it. Please feel free to stop by at your convenience to add a note or your signature. Monday is the end of BLP, and we start the adventure that is VOL. [image.png] Experimental Details Review the window notes and any associated equipment guides for additional details. Please refer to the Week 12 edition for details on ECE and BLP. NAP This is a new one that Sarah has been working on. Students will be working in pairs or groups of three. Equipment needed will be on the bench beside hood A. We?ll be using vortex mixers, which are new to 1110. To activate the mixer, students just need to press their centrifuge tube down into the top cone. It will turn off when pressure is released. Waste is as expected, liquids and chemical solids go in the white can, rinsed plastic tubes in the blue bucket. GAS Each TA will pick up a large bag containing Alka-Seltzer, antacids, and small empty bags. It?s ok for students to ask for an additional package of Alka-Seltzer at the window for Part C. We?ve switched to generic Alka-Seltzer which has had a sticker applied to it to identify it. In general, the white tablets in the paper/foil packet are Alka-Seltzer and the colored tablets in the zip top bag are antacid. Extra tubing for the gas collection apparatus will be available in the window. The barometers in each room are near the thermostat (on the same wall as Hood B). There are extra ring stands in each room between the ADA sink and Hood A. VOL This one has A LOT of equipment and solutions. Students will be using the multimeter kits which are on the bench beside Hood A. If they report that one is not working properly, please just swap the broken part for one of the replacements in the window- they aren?t required to exchange the entire kit. The provided electrode kit is to be used for both Parts A and B. One magnetic stir bar is provided in the kit to help differentiate between iron and zinc electrodes (iron is magnetic, zinc is not). The students will be sanding the oxidation layer off the electrodes with emery paper/cloth. This should be done on the provided cover stock; the cover stock should be placed on the provided black plastic tray. The whole sanding procedure should be done under a snorkel. Each room has been provided with 7 trays since they only have 7 snorkels. We will not provide more trays. Students should not be sanding directly on the lab bench. Doing this makes me sad :( There?s a ton of waste for this experiment. Liquids should be discarded in the chemical waste beakers (white can). We?ll be putting larger waste beakers out and adding another bottle of 6 M NaOH. All rooms have a third white can under the hood. If you do a waste run and take three cans from one room, replace the third can that was taken from under the hood. Contaminated paper, including spent emery paper, should go in the blue bucket. Spent electrodes should be collected in the canister in the window. Spent porous cups and Pasteur pipets should be discarded in the orange bucket. LCP Students will be using ice toward the end of lab. We do not provide scoops for ice, instead students should use an empty beaker from their drawer. At least one glove should be removed when walking through the hallway. If students are in the hallway with two gloved hands, please gently ask them to remove one glove. Additional commentary is not necessary. TM2 Students will be analyzing their products from TM1. There are two materials packaged in smaller quantities: 3% silver nitrate and hexaaminecobalt (III) chloride. The entire days? worth of these materials is on the reagent cart. The silver nitrate is in small brown bottles, the bottles are in a black plastic bin. Anything left in a bottle issued to a group should be discarded as chemical waste, the bottle then disposed of in the orange bucket. The hexaaminecobalt (III) chloride is in small plastic tubes. Anything left in a tube that was issued to a group should be discarded as chemical waste, the tube then disposed of in the blue bucket. Other Information Save the Date! Our end of semester party is schedule for April 28th at 3:00pm in McPherson 1015. We?ll be having pizza! VOL Guide Everyone is required to review the VOL equipment guide. Copies will be available in each window and in the prep lab office. After reviewing the guide, you will need to sign the roster next to Keyth. Only 2/3 of you fulfilled this requirement for SST/WST. We track this and consider it when asked for references, etc. Third Floor Ice Machine As many of you have noticed, the third floor ice machine is having a moment. We?ll be needing it for some of the experiments this week. If the machine is not able to produce sufficient ice, we?ll bring some up from the prep lab. Just let us know in the GroupMe if this needs to happen. Summer Plans We will be open over the summer. We have lab on Tuesdays from 8:30-11:25 and 12:00-2:55. The rest of the week we?ll work on other fun projects to help get us ready for the fall semester. If you are around over the summer and would like to work with us, please let Tyler know.
