From weaver.646 at osu.edu Mon Sep 1 14:10:41 2025 From: weaver.646 at osu.edu (Weaver, Tyler) Date: Mon, 1 Sep 2025 18:10:41 +0000 Subject: [Prep Lab Students] Autumn 2025- Week 2 Message-ID: The Weekly Mix Volume: Autumn 2025 | Edition: Week 2 Schedule What a weekend! Three days of beautiful weather and a win over the Longhorns! Let?s carry that momentum into our first week of lab. Here's what we have planned: [image.png] Experimental Details DPR TAs should not need to pick up anything from the lab support window. Please see the notes below about pipets, pipet pumps, & burets and goggles & lab manuals. WRM TAs should not need to pick up anything from the lab support window. We?ll keep a box of extra WRM pipets in the window. Please break into this if a room runs out prior to the next cart check. The box is white and should say ?WRM pipets? on it. If the box starts to get low, let us know. Please see the notes below about pipets, pipet pumps, & burets and goggles & lab manuals. INK TAs will be picking up INK unknowns from the lab support window. Remember that unknowns will be kept in the plastic boxes on the unknown/handouts shelf. Do not give out unknowns to students. We have put some extras of each pen, pencils, and blank chromatography paper in both windows just in case they are needed. Be prepared to give out 50-mL volumetric flasks. Please see the notes below about pipets, pipet pumps, & burets and goggles & lab manuals. General Information Pipets, Pipet Pumps, & Burets Be prepared to direct students to the window cart for pipets, pipet pumps, and burets. Pipet pumps that ?leak? and pipet pumps that have glass broken off in them should be collected in the designated bin. Goggles If students need goggles that fit over their glasses, they can swap their ?normal? goggles at the window for a pair of OTG goggles. If the OTG goggles still don?t work, we have a number of other options they can try. These are in a small white bucket in each window. These goggles should be cleaned with the provided alcohol wipes before students try them on. Students in Chem 1110, 1210, 1610, and 1910H will receive a free pair of goggles from their Lab TA. If a student not enrolled in these courses has never taken a chemistry course on OSU?s Columbus campus, they may stop by the window and get a pair of goggles for free. If they have taken chemistry on the Columbus campus before and do not have the goggles they were previously provided with, they?ll need to purchase a new pair from Chem Stores, 180 Celeste. Everyone should be keeping an eye out for goggle box litter. Please help keep our trash under control by picking up anything you see. Please replace the bags in the blue recycling barrels as necessary. Extra trash bags are available in both windows. Emptied large cardboard boxes should be broken down and placed in the hallway for recycling. Lab Manuals Boxes of lab manuals have been dropped off in each lab room. The boxes are stacked on the floor against the wall closest to Hood B. Each box has already been cut open for easy access. Emptied boxes should be broken down and placed in the hallway for recycling. Towards the end of the week, we may need to redistribute boxes between rooms to account for enrollment variances. We have been made aware that the covers on some manuals were accidentally cut when the boxes were opened. Please set any damaged manuals aside, we can tape them and use them for TAs in the spring. 1910H In-Lab Demos Dr. Zhang will be doing a few in-lab demos for his students this semester. This coming Tuesday, September 2nd, he will be doing fireworks balloons. There will be some loud bangs toward the beginning of the lab period for the 8:00am and 11:10am sessions. Security When closing a floor, be sure that all labs are locked up. If there are two people assigned to the window, one person should lock the lab doors, the other person should later check that they are all truly locked. If a lab is not being used, it needs to be locked. If you are completing a task that necessitates unlocking a room, please relock the room when you leave it. We cannot leave the prep lab unlocked and unattended. If you are the last person in the office/lab and need to go somewhere please have someone come down to babysit the lab, or grab key #1 in Keyth, and lock up while you are gone. If Sarah and/or Emma dismiss the student employees before returning to the lab, the students should lock the door into the office and the door into the lab before heading out. We might need to adjust the quote, or we might need to find/demonstrate a more efficient method to complete the task. * Completion of one-a-days takes precedence over working on homework, studying, NYT games, etc. * Remember, being permitted to work on homework, studying, NYT games, etc. is a privilege, not a right. This privilege will be revoked if necessary. * Completion of your one-a-days should be recorded on the whiteboard in the appropriate place. We log this information. This week is a full five days, here's what we have planned: [image.png] Experimental Details Refer to the window notes and gather sheets for additional details. Please see the Week 2 edition for details on WRM and INK. MSR We have a bin for broken burets, in some cases we can salvage them. (List price is ~$200 per buret) Please keep any pipet pumps that have broken off pipets in them or are leaking in the designated bin- we may be able to salvage them. CPC The distillation apparatus needs to be unplugged when not in use. Ideally, the water pump and heating mantle should be plugged in and turned on about 10-15 minutes before the lab session starts. The apparatus needs to be checked at least every 30 minutes by someone from the lab support window. Set a timer for 30 minutes to remind yourselves. This video shows how to add ice and transfer water from the receiving flask to the heating flask (still pot) properly. You must watch this video prior to the start of CPC. Remember the end of both pieces of tubing (from the condenser and to the condenser) should be inside the bucket. If you need to stop heating the flask for any reason, turn the heating mantle off and lower it away from the flask. This is why we set them up so high- it makes it easier to kill the heat quickly. SOL Keep an eye on the 15-mL tubes (green lid) and weigh boats. These items will likely need to be restocked throughout the week. Extra weigh boats are behind the boards. Extra 15-mL tubes are in the same cabinet as the cups and lids (under the balances, closest to Hood A). We?re going to be using vortex mixers for this experiment. These have been placed at each snorkel, so each room only has 7. They are touch activated, so pushing the capped tube on the inner cone starts the mixer. We may have a learning curve here. Please collect emptied green 15-mL falcon tube racks in the designated bin in the lab support window. CDY The TAs will pick up candies, which are on the unknown shelf. The students will need to use the carboy of distilled water for this one- please check the level in the carboy when you are doing your readiness checks. If it looks like it?s getting low, let us know. If you need a single candy, please check the ?partial unknown sets? bin before breaking a whole set. Once broken, please place the broken set into the ?partial unknown sets? bin. General Information GroupMe When you are on the clock, you should be monitoring the GroupMe. When something is done, or will be done by you, please indicate that in the GroupMe. Requests from Prep Lab Staff I want to remind you that requests from my staff (Linda, MJ, Sarah, and Emma) carry the same weight as requests from me. We work as one team, and it?s important that you treat their instructions with the same priority and respect as if they came directly from me. Gather Sheets Please be sure you are leaving gather sheets with the associated gather. Once the cart check or cart change has been completed, you can throw the gather sheet away. We would prefer it doesn?t come in the office since it was with a tub full of chemicals. Calling 911 We need to expand on our guidance for calling 911. Our new ?always call 911? list now include seizures. So, if someone passes out, nearly passes out, or has a seizure you must call 911. Spent Daily Sheets At the end of the day, all spent daily sheets should be placed in the completed forms basket on top of the gather sheet cabinet. I review these and need to store certain parts of them for future reference. Please do not throw them away. General Chemistry Prep Lab ? Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry ? Here?s what we got going on: [image.png] Experimental Details Refer to the window notes and gather sheets for additional details. Please see the Week 3 edition for details on CPC, MSR and SOL. DAG Materials will be provided on the bench beside Hood A. Be prepared to provide replacement plastic 50 mL graduated cylinders. The students tend to put these in their drawers instead of returning them. There are now enough brass pieces of each type for each student to have one. FPD Be prepared to direct students to the ice machine outside of the restrooms. Keep an eye on the ice machines, let us know if it?s getting low. If the machine is getting low, we can top it off with ice from the prep lab. You are also welcome to suggest students use the ice machine the third floor- there are no 1220 labs up there this semester. We do not provide a scoop to students; they should just use an empty beaker from their drawer. Please see the FPD apparatus guide for details on replacement parts and repairs that can be done within the lab support window. SYN Day 1 Be prepared to direct students to the ice machine outside of the restrooms. There is no scoop provided, students should just use an empty beaker from their drawer. Emma, Sarah, and/or Tyler will manage the microwave. Note that concentrated phosphoric acid is not needed for Day 1 and will not be provided. Each room will have a microscope. We will snag a tiny amount of sample from the first group to obtain crude product to put under the microscope. If students observe the temperature on the digital readout going down as they heat up their melting point apparatus, they plugged the thermocouple in the wrong way. They just need to remove it, turn it 180? and reinsert it. Replacement thermocouples will also be available in the window. Each room is limited to only 6 groups due to the layout in the microwave. If a room asks for more reaction tubes, please check they don?t have more than 6 groups before handing anything out. Any questions you cannot answer should be directed to Tyler. EMS These will be set up on the bench beside Hood A. Replacement parts are available in the window. The power supplies and discharge tubes are new, but the spectrometers are the same. General Information Window Tasks Please do not complete window tasks too early. We intentionally have them offset from certain times to be sure the window is appropriately staffed. Shift Switches Please remember that shift switches are not official until an email is sent to preplabstaff at lists.osu.edu. The sub-GroupMe is intended to only be used as a tool to facilitate shift switches. Blue Bucket Lids Take the cart moves sheet with you. We laminate it specifically so you can do this. Be sure you are placing and removing the red lids for the blue buckets as needed. Let us know if you have any questions here. Consumable Items Checklist We have made some adjustments to the consumable items checklist to help clarify a few points. We have also provided a clipboard in each window to use when completing these checks. The clipboard has a sticker on it with Emma?s guide to restocking the consumable items. Please consult this resource as needed. Training Survey Now that we have a couple weeks of lab under out belts, I would like to collect information on how well our training sessions prepared you. Please complete the survey linked below by the end of the week. This is paid time. https://osu.az1.qualtrics.com/jfe/form/SV_02pxl6AWuSQ3uWq General Chemistry Prep Lab ? You need to take the cart moves sheet with you. You can take the version we?ve had all semester, or you can take the version that?s attached. Laminated copies of both are provided in the lab support windows. Please also note that we?ve essentially failed when it comes to placing and removing the red lids from the blue buckets. If a cart is going into storage and has a blue bucket, the red lid needs to be placed on top of it. If a cart is being put out for use, the red lid needs to be removed. PPG When doing cart checks for this experiment, swap the entire bucket of reagents regardless of fill level. Do not check individual bottles- it?ll take too long. PbI We?ll be using the vacuum ports for this experiment; the TAs do not need to do anything with the vacuum pump. We will also be using the ovens; they open by pulling the bottom of the handle up towards the ceiling- no rotating required. BAR The spectrometers use the same power cord as the hot plates. There is a ?broken UV-Vis? cart in the window. Please place any broken UV-Vis on this cart immediately as they are reported. As always with anything broken, please put a broken item sticker on it describing the issue. When doing the cart check for this experiment, please swap all allura red bottles. We can check and refill them down in the lab. SYN Day 2 Concentrated phosphoric acid is used for Day 2 and will be provided in Hood A. Any questions you cannot answer for this experiment should be directed to Tyler. XUF Day 1 Students will not be running XRF analysis on their pennies (as indicated in the lab manual). Instead, XRF results are on the sticker attached to each bagged penny. Hazardous gas will be produced when the penny dissolves. If the exhaust stops working the lab room and the neighboring room must be evacuated. General Information Checklists Checklists and forms should be taken with you when completing a task. These are used to help you remember to complete all necessary components. Anyone completing a Lab Readiness Check should be verifying that the correct cart is in the front of the room. This should be easy if you have prepared your checklist and are using it. Cart Checks & Refills After completing a cart check, you should refill any non-full bottles you bring back down prior to putting them back on the shelf. The only time you should not refill containers is if you are told not to, or the stock carboy (or bottle) is empty. Window Notes & Guides You should review the window notes and equipment guides each time you are assigned a window shift. Things are being missed that were clearly presented in these guides. Broken Pipet Pumps We have a bin in the window for pipet pumps that are leaking and pipet pumps that have glass broken off in them. When they find their way to the window, please place them in the designated bin. Collecting Abandoned Glassware We didn?t really talk about this task during training, so we wanted to clarify our expectations. When completing this task, please put a tub on a cart and take it upstairs. Check in and around the sinks, the black trays, and the hoods for locker items that appear to be abandoned. There should be two large stir rods in HOOD B, one for each waste beaker. Bring the abandoned items back down to the lab, wash them, and then return them to the window on the floor you got them from. Here?s what we have scheduled: [image.png] Experimental Details Review the window notes and any associated equipment guides for additional details. Please see the Week 5 edition for details on PbI and BAR. MML Model kits will be provided on the bench beside Hood A. Sarah and Emma have replacement parts in both windows if needed. CYC TAs will pick up samples of CuO at the start of lab. These will be kept in the labeled bin on the unknown shelf. Unknown bins should not be removed from the unknown shelf. Only hand out full sets of unknowns to TAs. Any leftovers should be properly disposed of by the TA at the end of the lab session. CLK Extra thermometers and replacement batteries will be in the window. This one usually uses a bunch of spill kits. Keep a close eye on your spill kits and request replacements as needed. LLT Blue square carboys of 0.44 M NaOH will be swapped out during the lab readiness checks by those completing them. When swapping out the blue carboys, check the fill level of the spill tray. Let us know if it?s more than half full. Partially filled bottles of lemon and lime juice should be placed in the fridge. We will periodically combine these. When doing a gather, please check the fridge first for full bottles of lemon and lime juice. If you need more than what is available in the fridge, please grab new bottles from aisle 28. No partial bottles of lemon or lime juice should be left in aisle 28. XUF Day 2 We will be moving a large instrument into Hood A of 330. A tank of acetylene will also be clamped to the bench near this hood. While the instrument is in this hood, the orange bucket will temporarily be placed under Hood A. General Information Consumables Please follow the consumables checklist when restocking these items. We?re noticing deviation from this list again. Cleanup of Abandoned Equipment This is not the job of the Head TA or the ALS. We have a task scheduled at least once per day to clear out any equipment that has been abandoned in common areas.
